What hard disk brand do you recommend? I'm looking to buy at 40 GB drive and noticed that the Maxtor prices were low. What's Maxtor's general reputation? I've heard bad things about Samsung. What about Seagate? Are there any know compatability problems between drives?
Thanks.

if price is close, i would buy either the maxtor or seagate before the samsung
my opinion is that the old time players/hard drive makers know what they are doing and make good products in general and stand behind their warranties
have a nice day! :)

I've had Maxtor drives before and they've always been pretty good, I'm actually picking up a 40GB Maxtor myself. Seagate has a very good reputation as well so I'd just compare prices on the two. I personally wouldn't go for the Samsung but that's just my opinion.
My personal favorite is the Quantum Fireball series, and I'd recommend staying away from Western Digital drives because it looks like they're having problems in the new linux distro's (RH Wolverine comes to mind). Also my Western Digital went on me.

Personally, I'd go for the IBM Deskstar (ATA100 - DTLA series). They are really fast and hardly makes any noise at all.
If you are aiming for disks above 32.8 GB, make sure your BIOS can handle them. Too bad if you can't use the whole disk? :)

From what I've heard, the IBM IDE drives are the best. I think Maxtor beats them in performance/$ though.
I have a 27 gig Western Digital and it has treated me well so far.
One thing to make sure of is that you are getting a 7200rpm drive...or atleast comparing the price to other 5400 rpm drives. Some of maxtor's bigger drives are 5400.

There is a reason that you are told not to install the Mandrake beta on WD's. Many are hardware buggy.
IBM are definately the first choice for HDD.

I am in love with the new IBM HDDs. Both IDE and SCSI are decent.
A few months ago I bought a 30GB ATA100 deskstar. In in my FreeBSD samba server. Even if you had to pay $20.00 more to get an IBM, it's easily worth it.
How much would you pay to undo a total HDD crash? (sorry, sounded like a salesperson)

Check out www.storagereview.com (http://www.storagereview.com) They have a lot of good, in-depth reviews.
IBM is fast, but don't go for the 45GB IBM DeskStar 75GXP...

IBM DeskStar without a doubt. I've got a 30 gig in my box and it works great. However, there are some tricks if you want to install Linux on an ATA100 drive. But it's doable. (I got mine working) search in the General Linux Questions forum for the ATA 100 trick.

IBM's are the fastest, but they're expensive.
For best price/performance, go with Maxtor. They have a great warranty, too. I have one at home, very fast.

I just got 2 20GB IBM drives for my system, and they were very competitively priced -- $130 ea. from outpost.com
The larger drives were just as good for price, I just didn't need the extra space.
