I'm interested in feedback for how i815E and via based chipsets for both intel and AMD handle linux installations. ATA-66 and ATA-100 included.

I'm mostly interested in Mandrake 8.0beta and debian potato/woody/progeny/corel 2 distributions, but any good/bad experiences you've had with any distribution's installation procedure is welcome.

I know enough to stay away from aureal soundcards, and usb input devices :) What else?

Got a Abit KT7-RAID (VIA133) with a Duron 700 running smooth as silk here :D

Mandrake 7.2 installed just fine on the ATA100 channels right out of the box.

Only 'problem' I've noticed on the KT7-RAID board is the little cooling fan they have stuck to the VIA chipset. This is a 'oil controlled' little blower which is supposed to regulate the fan speed through the temperature of the oil in the bearings. Hotter chip -> thinner oil -> greater fan speed -> cool things down again. Problem is that my Chrome Orb cooler on the Duron seems to cool down the surrounding area too (including the VIA chip), resulting in a noisy fan on the VIA chip after a couple of weeks uptime.
Removing that little blower may be just as well.
