I've managed to get my new computer fully funnctional. In the process however, I've partially hosed my old box.

For some reason, linux (at least mandrake) never wanted to see the ps/2 mouse part. This had not been a problem as I had a USB mouse, so in the install I would just use the keyboard up through the mouse configuration portion and then go from there.

Now my usb ports are dead -- by this I mean they are not getting any power. My mouse is an optical mouse so I can tell --

Why would USB ports die? What might I do to revive them? any thought? I'm thinking about just disabling the onabord usb ports and ps/s input in favor of just installing a second pci usb board. Bad idea?

i don't know what kernel you are running but if it is kernel 2.2.18 or 2.4.x the you probably have the modules installed, try modprobe usb-uhci (i think...) do a modprobe -l | grep usb to get a list of usb modules.

i have a optical mouse and mandrake 7.2
and my USB mouse works fine,
mandrake likes to call it a PS/2 mouse,
but it works,
so i would guess that the USB ports on your computer are bad or you need to upgrade your kernal. ;)
