Ok i have a maxtor diamond max 60 40.9 GB UDMA 100 and when i try to install it set as primary master on its own ide chanel with a burner and dvd on the other set as master and slave. When bios is set to auto detect hd's it neither finds it or reports no hard drives or a hard drive fault it just gets stuck on detecting primary master HD, I have tried an old ibm 13GB which works fine, and the bios correctly reports 0 HD's when neither r connected
Is the HD bust or i am i being stupid and doing something wrong?
thanks

This question is by no means an insult...but is does your motherboard/controller card support ATA/100?

what sort of motherboard do you have?
Maybe you should flash your bios with the latest version, perhaps it has support for greater hdd sizes?

If your M/B does not support ATA100, you can run the config utility that comes with the drive and try and change the speed to whatever your motherboard supports. May help.
All ATA66 and ATA100 should be backward compatible though as long as you use the standard ribbon cable and not the one with the blue connector (ATA66,100).

If your mobo does not have a blue connector on it, then you do not have ATA66/100 support. However, the Maxter will work at the ATA33 or PIO4 speed depending on your mobo. As mentioned before, check your BIOS. If your mobo is a few years old it may not recognize the drive and will require the Maxtor EZ-Drive loaded on the drive.
You did check the Maxtor website for assistance? If not, I suggest you do so that you can get the latest testing software before contacting Maxtor about the problem. And good luck with getting a replacement drive if that is needed. Maxtor pissed me off so well that I will never purchase another Maxtor drive ever again. One full month of waiting for a replacement is simply not good customer service and extremely poor inventory control.
