I am trying to install and use a Backpack CDRW (external, parallel port interface) on the server at work (I am the network administrator and programmer for the small company) and am having some trouble and would appreciate some assistance. It is a Pentium II running Redhat 7.0 with kernel 2.4.2. The big problem is that I have rarely used cd writers and never one on Linux (including installing one) so I am not quite familiar with them.

I have installed Parallel support and PARIDE. I have also installed the backpack protocol and scsi emulation support. As it is a scsi disk based system, the regular scsi card is installed (of course) and all other scsi drivers are installed as modules (that shouldn't affect it though). The ATAPI/IDE drivers seem to be fine.

When I try to mount the drive (pcd0 used) it just says that pcd has an 'incorrect major or minor node number' and if I mount using pg0 it says pg is not a block device.

If I try 'insmod pcd' or 'insmod pg', the main part of the error I receive says 'Operation not permitted'.

I would appreciate any assistance I can get.

Thanks.

Never used one, but I have seen posts here in the past about the Backpack. Have you tried searching the major forums? You may find the answer. Also try a Google search.

Thanks for the google search suggestion. I will try it. Actually I did forget to mention that I have searched the archives of back posts for the discussion group but thanks anyway.
