Hello,

I'm having a new system customized, and I want to make sure everything works. I think most things will be fine, but I'm not sure about the modem.

The card they're recommending to me is a "Acer V.90 56k Rockwell Chipset Software Voice Fax PCI" From what little I know of modems and linux, software switched is a bad thing... is that modem compatible?

I asked about a hardware switched modem and they recommend a 'USR 3COM 2977 Modem' Would that work for sure? It's $60 more, which is only worth it if the other isn't going to work.

I think the other components are ok. The only other one I'm worried about is the video card: Aopen Geforce2 MX-200 32MB AGP.

and for safety's sake, the logitech cordless trackman FX?

I'm sorry I haven't been able to find a way to check these myself. I get confused when I visit compatibility list sites, since the names differ, etc.

Thanks,
Dusty

The store should know whether it's a software modem or not.

I Canada, any pci modem under $30-40 I figure to be a software modem.

Try looking up the modem or chipset at winmodems.org .net (the site mentioned in the NHF).

Gefore2 is fine as you can use the nvidia drivers along with the generic X drivers.

Try www.xfree86.org (http://www.xfree86.org) for the trackman or search Google.
