Just installed Mandrake 7.2 Complete, and trying to get everything up and running. When trying to configure my internet connection, the first question I'm asked is what type of connection. Mine is a regular modem. Second question-which port is your modem in, and I'm given the choice of com1 -com4. Only problem is mine is in com5(don't know yet how to check this in 'drake, but that's where it is when I'm in Windoze. Do I have to reinstall my modem? or is there a simpler way. Remember - I'm new - step by step.
Thanks again,

ok dude. First off, is it com5 or IRQ5? Dont remember seeing many Com5's around. I personnaly go to kppp and setup a connection from there. Once you get the basic info (dial this number, this is my name and crap) go to the device section (I think its called device) and pick how you want it to talk with your modem. I personnaly use an external usr 28.8 modem and I connect through Stty0 I believe. If you dont know right off, cycle through the various connections there and then try the query modem option to see if it will detect it from there. Sorry Its not specific, but I am at work right now.

My modem is also on COM5 in windows. I have been trying to get Linux (RH7.0) to recognize it and have not had any success as of yet. Any help would be grateful.

Looks like you guys are using Internal modems. Windows use shared COM feature so that COM 1-4 can be used for external drives.
One way to try is that if you do not have any other external drive, disable COM1 in BIOS and use that against that port in Linux. It doesn't matter whether Windows use what COM port since it's OS dependent.
I'm just suggesting though. It's purely theory. I've neve use a computer with shared COM port. I haven't buy those ready-made computers long time ago. Building my own is the greatest thing happen to me. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif
