Yamaha sound on COL eDesktop 2.4

Setup:
Intel motherboard
PIII 400, 128Megs RAM
Yamaha OPL3 sound chip (according to Win98, which used to be on this machine)
COL eDesktop 2.4 (now the only OS on machine)

Problem: on bootup, the OPL3 and OPL3sa2 modules always fail. When I do a dmesg, I see the entry "OPL3 not detected ff". Any ideas on what is going wrong?
