I would appreciate any experiences you folks can share relating to the capabilities of wireless dsl routers.

Specifically, I need to know what kind of distances you can get out of them and whether they really work in a multi-floor office environment. I have a friend who's home wireless setup works great, but I don't know if this means that an office setup would fare as well.

I'm thinking of installing a wireless dsl router in our office's library (where there are two research computers) on the main floor, and rigging up 2 other computers on the second floor of the building to also use the dsl connection.

All feedback on the issue is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Mike

alright.. this is not from personal experiance, but this is what i know. Wireless is great... until your passing secret stuff. I know a guy out in AZ that bought a nice little (well... actually large 4 foot) receiver for hacking into wireless networks. They are not very secure at all.

well... i would not soley relay on me.. lets see what other people say :)

also do you have you officed wired with cat5? or is this a new office?

hope i helped

You can make that out of a pringles can.

I set up a wireless network at my boss' house, it covers three floors and it works ok. The biggest problem with wireless (and the reason we haven't bothered with it at work) out side of cost is the security issue. As the previous posts have said, anyone with in a 10 mile radius of your wireless access point can access your network (if they have the right tools). If you're not worried about it, then go for it.

Some of the newer wireless cards are supposed to work flawlessly with Linux as well as windows.

Thanks for your comments, fellas.

I too am a little skittish about the security issues.

Wireless would make life very simple, but I definitely need to assure that our business data remains secure.

Looks like I'll have to tote out the electric drill.....heh heh heh.

Thanks again.
