Some of the winmodems with Lucent chipsets work with Linux as long as you install the linmodem drivers.

I believe www.linmodems.net (http://www.linmodems.net) .org have lists of supported modems.

Of course any pci hardware modem will work though they do cost around twice as much as their winmodem counterparts.

There are some PCI modems that work with Linux right out of the box. Archtek (http://www.archtek.com/) has a PCI modem (5634PCV?/5634PCW?) that they advertise to work with Linux. I've used their ISA modems in the past with very good results in both Windoze and Linux.
