I had a 486/33 laptop, 8MB RAM, 240MB hdd that ran Slack 8 just fine... I'm positive the same thing can be done with Debian! ds801 05-09-2002, 11:46 AM I've got a 486 laptop with 8MB ram, running Red Hat 6.2 (text-only), 25MB swap partition, 355MB for the installation. The only problem I had was trying to keep the install size down. ph34r 05-09-2002, 11:49 AM I've had Slack 7.1 and now 8.0 on a old wimpy laptop as well - 486sx33 with 4mb ram. Upped it to 12mb ram, but that was after Linux was installed. Read the 4mb Laptop HOWTO - it will give you some good hints on getting Linux installed. One of the main problems is running out of ram when you use the boot/root disks, network, etc. but that can be overcome. Icarus 05-09-2002, 12:05 PM I heard it was difficult to load Slack on a machine with 16MB or less of memory (lockup problems). Did you guys have to do the work around for that or did you do a straight install? z0mbix 05-09-2002, 12:52 PM Originally posted by mahdi: I heard it was difficult to load Slack on a machine with 16MB or less of memory (lockup problems). Then, I just put the drive back into the laptop and let kudzu detect the hardware changes. Icarus 05-09-2002, 01:20 PM Sounds like work-arounds to me :p mdwatts 05-09-2002, 05:39 PM Originally posted by mahdi: Sounds like work-arounds to me :p You can always install WinXP instead. ;) No wait... XP wouldn't install no matter what you did. justlinux.com
