I'm starting to build my new system, AMD Athlon XP-1700 cpu, Shuttle AK31A mobo, in a standard minitower case.

I read a "Build your own system" docs on motherboards.com and they mention something about Riser Pins. Is it referring to these four plastic pins that came with the case? Exactly how does these go in the case, they are not screw types but smooth on the ends? Should they be put in the mobo first then connect to the case or should they be put in the case then connect to mobo?

Then I see four rubber looking washers also, where should they go?

There is only four riser pins and washers but the case and mobo have a total of eight holes.

I'm confused at this point cause I don't want to short my mobo out.

TIA.

Okay. The riser pins screw into the case. Only screw them into the holes that match the motherboard. You should also have some screws that fit into the riser pins. The plastic washers go in along with the screws.

Thnx for the reply. It seems that I don't have any riser pins that came with my case, it was a cheap one, now I realize I should have bought a better case.

The case holes are bevel shape, I guess thats what they are called. I need to know this, I have five plastic washers with glue on one side.
Which side do the washers belong, between the case and mobo? If I put the screws in, is it okay for the screws to touch that round built in metal ring on the mobo holes?

I've built computers before but the barebone cases I've bought would have the mobo & cpu pre-installed, so this has got me baffeled.

I hope I'm clear on this. Thnx again.

You can buy a motherboard kit for a couple of dollars that includes the riser pins. They are usually gold. I always put the washer through the screws on the top of the mobo. I've once put washers on both the bottom and top but it was difficult to keep the bottom washer aligned after putting the mobo on. I've also not put washers on at all and never had a problem. As a matter of fact, two of my machines now have no washers.
