LittleGreenGecko 05-06-2002, 03:25 PM can anyone tell me if the latest release of Xfree86 supports this graphics card.. cuz the xf86config does not show the card listed. ASCI Blue 05-06-2002, 03:36 PM That's a pretty old card from what I remember and it should be supported. If that's a Virge chip (or any other chip) try looking for it. IIRC It's S3 so you ought to start your search in the S3 section. Lorithar 05-06-2002, 03:52 PM Proper support for most of the S3's is in 4.2.0 ... and for reference or cutting edge stuff look up Tim Roberts pages at http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html LittleGreenGecko 05-06-2002, 04:35 PM ok, so I found the right support on xfree website, however, I need to know if it is supported for x86 archetecture. http://www.xfree.org/4.2.0/Status28.html#28 Support (accelerated) for the ViRGE chipsets, as well as the Trio3D and Trio3D/2X, is provided by the XF86_SVGA server with the s3v driver. Support (accelerated) for the Savage3D, Savage3D/MV, Savage4, and Savage2000, is provided by the XF86_SVGA server with the s3_savage driver on some OSes (Linux, *BSD). so does this mean that the s3_savage driver is the one that I want??? mdwatts 05-06-2002, 04:44 PM I had the same video card a while back though I sold it to a friend. It worked fine at that time with X 3.3.6 with a resolution of 1600x1200/16bit on my old 19" monitor. At the time, Caldera's eDesktop 2.4 detected and configured the S540 during installation. LittleGreenGecko 05-06-2002, 04:54 PM I don't have the luxury of a nice installer, as the distro is Gentoo.... It works really well, but the configuration is on going. ASCI Blue 05-06-2002, 05:52 PM Hey hey! I use Gentoo too. The first thing you gotta find out is which chipset that card uses and see if there's a match in XFree86's setup. If it is a savage chipset the savage driver should work just fine for it. LittleGreenGecko 05-06-2002, 06:57 PM hey ascii, would the wrong graphics card setting in xf86config produce an IO error in x? mdwatts 05-06-2002, 07:03 PM I've also installed Gentoo a few times both at home and at the office. I would suggest you find out what Xserver the S540 uses (sorry as I can't remember myself) and then manually edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 yourself. There should be docs available at the X site and DiamondMM that will tell you which Xserver to use. Of course (my favorite) a Google search for i.e. S540 XF86Config may very well find a suitable config file you can modify for your particular setup. justlinux.com
