Hey everyone I'm new to linux and have a problem. I can't get my DSL modem to work with linux. I'm using Linux Mandrake 8.1 and have a Speedstream 3060 modem. I have Bellsouth ADSL. Not sure if Bellsouth has service anywhere else but I'm in Gastonia, North Carolina. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Is this a usb modem/ethernet card or does it use a dsl modem connected to a pci ethernet card?

What you need to do is call Bellsouth and tell them that you have a laptop with no USB ports. Tell them that they need to supply you with an external modem.

I had the same problem, and they sent me an external modem (Alcatel Speed Touch Home). I got a $75 netgear gateway router, and all is fine. I did not have to compile any experimental drivers into the kernel, all I had to do was set a default gateway for my lan.
