I've now been using the IceWM/Slackware distro Vector Linux 6.0 Light Edition. I have the following observations:

Slackware is very fast, both on bootup and shutdown. Is this due to the different (non-System VI) scripts on Slack? However, I prefer the IceWM environment to Xfce. Unlike pre-4.6 Xfce, rubber banding is supported. I don't mind the 'Windows 95' look...just like I think the 'Vista' look of Xfce is okay. It's the flakey Windows underpinnings and Micturatingsloth license that I have issues with.

I'd recommend this to anyone.

Slackware is even faster if you optimize the kernel and software compilations for your setup. Spend some time with it and you will see.
