My sound did not work except for kalarm and system sounds. I discovered by accident that command 'alsamixer' showed PCM to be set at 0. Bringing it up to a higher level gave me sound. So, installation was with PCM preset to 0. Sigh!

I find it interesting that the following excerpts from Alsa analyzer show that no sound driver exists. Kubuntu 7.04 on Googling for 9.04 sound servers produces nothing except random hits that have nothing to do with sound drivers on 9.04. Somehow it works without one, I guess.

However, there is a continuing problem on this 1.5 year old Dell Vostro 1000.

The problem is aumix does not have all the many connections I find on other computers. It is limited to Master Volume; Igain; and Balance. This makes it impossible to record with arecord.

I wonder if the sound card perhaps is a minimal sound card and is capable of no more?

Any ideas, anyone?

Here is a terminal command which downloads a script to test Alsa, then uploads the address to look at the results, for a limited time. This is a tremendous aid to those of us who have no clue about sound systems.

wget -O alsa-info.sh http://alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh && bash ./alsa-info.sh

In my case, Kubuntu 9.04 on sda9, here are partial results.

Here is a POSSIBLE answer:

http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/judgement-day-studio-dave-tests-ubuntu-studio-904

Which refers to:

http://idyllictux.wordpress.com/2009/04/21/ubuntu-904-jaunty-keeping-the-beast-pulseaudio-at-bay/

Note the first link refers to only two channels showing up in the mixer, which is why I wonder if this is my problem. In any case, it sounds similar.

I do not have time to follow this now.When I get to Mexico next week, I plan on making Youtube videos, and certainly need sound to work. So, as I get time, I will need to make this work.
