I just got one of these (http://apcmag.com/hp_launches_secondgen_netbook.htm) (away from home and in need of online consolation)...

I like Suse well enough, but if I go to update software it starts on about registering with Novell for enterprise suse and I'm slightly confused as to what that means and how to do it...

Also, see sig, I am biased towards Ubuntu. Would you good people give me any opinions about the way to go when Iget home with this?

Meantime I am off to transfer the ebook I just downloaded to my other new toy - the Sony eReader...:)

bump.... Anyone? I am sure you guys can answer me about the Suse and Novell reg thing... although maybe the thread is misplaced or that I am working oln such low bandwidth here I am reluctant to make a new one!

I shall dig out more about Ubuntu install on here - but from prior experience with mobile device drivers am reluctant to mess given the old motto "if it ain't broke..."

There should be a registration key with the SLED OS when the computer is delivered. If new, you should have it, if used, the seller still have it? The 2133 came with an official (and purchased with the machine) SLED license, and that is what is asking you to do, simply enter your license.

You said away from home, access to a USB CD/DVD drive? You can install Ubuntu as easy as always, and keep SLED (dual boot two Linux OSes). I am partial to Mandriva but still KDE 4.1, so not the offical 2009 release yet.

weird - it is new and no key was apparent... I shall have to give the CD a whirl now I am at home and hunt through the box again, but it came sealed and the documentation is truly minimal with no obvious sticker or any other form of key that I can see... My only other idea is that it may be somehow something one obtains in the process of registering with the HP site - I'll keep the thread updated and in the meantime if anyone else has HP/Suse experience I'd be glad to hear from them.

Oh and thanks for the idea of dual boot config..

I found this.

I found number on one of discs with my HP mini 2133 (it in right side of CD with comments).
And now, in SLED 10 (Suse Linux) you can put this number in terminal as root:
suse_register -a email="<your_email_address>" -a serial-hp=<serial_number>

and some more information maybe you can decode, lol.

Hi
So you have no 14 digit alphanumeric code on your system labeling or
documentation? If not, I suggest contacting HP support or the supplier
you purchased it from. Have a search of the forum as I'm sure someone
mentioned that's how they got theirs.

So I tried

suse_register -a regcode-sled= -a email={email} -a serial-hp={serial number of the mininote}

I did get some perl package errors but then nothing - not sure whether it is registered or not at that time.

But I did receive an email thanking me for registering and the product now appears in the account I had registered earlier at Novell Customer Centre.

SO what worked for me was:
1) go to Novell site and just register an account (which i used to access the forum etc.)
2) validate email address etc. to activate the account
3) open console and 'su' to root account
3) run the command: suse_register -a regcode-sled= -a email={email} -a serial-hp={serial number of the mininote}
4) wait a while and check your email or online account

You are not alone and both HP and Suse fornicated with a 4 legged friend on this one. :D
