So what's your October screenshot going to be? :D nolimit974 10-01-2008, 11:31 AM It's better to be early than to be on time. trilarian 10-01-2008, 11:33 AM It's better to be early than to be on time. I find it better to keep them waiting.... anticipation can be a turn on. psych-major 10-01-2008, 11:35 AM It's better to be early than to be on time. yes, but you technically posted a really late September screenshot, and tried to make us think it was for October. Now you have to pick an honest and true October one, because we caught you! :D elstupidos 10-01-2008, 12:47 PM http://xs432.xs.to/xs432/08403/clean615.png.xs.jpg (http://xs.to/xs.php?h=xs432&d=08403&f=clean615.png) Same as last months Arch Linux running Awesome 3 blackbelt_jones 10-03-2008, 11:14 PM http://img363.imageshack.us/img363/8246/snapper7lu5.png One thing that I really like about KDE4 is the sticky note widget. I wanted to get something similar for fluxbox, so I eventually rigged up a menu button to open the background image with Gimp, and then I would use gimp to add notes directly to the background image. Well, It looked kind of ugly, so I rigged up something a little more elaborate: "scratch fore" opens a plain white jpg with gimp. I type the note, crop it, and save the modified jpg under a different name. "scratch back" opens the background image ion gimp. I add the modified jpg from the previous step as a layer, save it, hit restart. It takes a little more time than the KDE4 sticky note, but I make it up in other ways. blackbelt_jones 10-03-2008, 11:41 PM We are doing good people lets keep it going Ubuntu with Fluxbox http://tpspace.wordpress.com/files/2008/10/octoberscreenshot.png There's a lot more than any fluxbox I know going on here! What's the docking bar, and what's that awesome transpaprent display? I must know! Darkbolt 10-04-2008, 04:58 AM There's a lot more than any fluxbox I know going on here! What's the docking bar, and what's that awesome transpaprent display? I must know! The panel at the bottom, I believe is avant window navigator...Nifty, but needs some ironing out from my experiences. The 'transparent display' in the top right is an aterm w/o decorations (Check out urxvt if you're interested in that, Ive seen quite a few man pages and such formatted in unicode, which aterm doesn't seem to like). The one that displays system information is called conky another nifty app, that I like, but havent had time to completely wrap my mind around its config file. nolimit974 10-04-2008, 12:45 PM that bar would be gdesklet and conky blackbelt_jones 10-04-2008, 04:12 PM Nothing like the first few days of screenshot season to get me working on my desktop. Here's a whole new paradigm. http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/8733/snapper8gp4.th.png (http://img525.imageshack.us/my.php?image=snapper8gp4.png)http://img525.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif (http://g.imageshack.us/thpix.php) Although I didn't like KDE4 (mostly because of changes in Konqueror), it's pretty clear that KDE4 has had a big influemce on my fluxbox desktop. I set up my background to be readily editable, largely inspired by KDE4's sticky notes widget. And now, I have real widgets, thanks to cairo-dock. The analog clock, cpu meter and weather forecast widgets are cairo-dock. I've got the actual docking station hidden. I know I complained bitterly about the widgeets in KDE4, but in Fluxbox widgets make more sense, since there are no applets. Yeah, I guess I'll go with that story. The use of notes, banners, and images on a plan black backdrop make sense. The widgets blend in better, and they made the desktop too cluttered for a big image. It's a problem with widgets, it's harder to find a wallpaper that looks good, IMO. Also, it's going to be easy to remove any items (old expired notes, etc) just by covering it up with with black. It'll blend right in. teeitup 10-05-2008, 03:13 AM sticky note apps are fairly common Affiche (http://www.collaboration-world.com/cgi-bin/project/screenshot.cgi?pid=5) stickynotes (http://www.mettle.dk/snotes.php) xpad (http://mterry.name/xpad/) blackbelt_jones 10-05-2008, 03:14 AM http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/824/snapper11ol2.th.png (http://img339.imageshack.us/my.php?image=snapper11ol2.png)http://img339.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif (http://g.imageshack.us/thpix.php) NEW! IMPROVED! blackbelt_jones 10-05-2008, 04:25 PM sticky note apps are fairly common Affiche (http://www.collaboration-world.com/cgi-bin/project/screenshot.cgi?pid=5) stickynotes (http://www.mettle.dk/snotes.php) xpad (http://mterry.name/xpad/) True, but compared to the apps I've used (Tomboy, Knotes), the KDE4 stickynote plasmoid, when locked, behaves more like a part of the desktop. Logout, login again, and it's still right there. Tomboy and knotes are essentially windows. Logout, login again, and they're gone. You have to call them back, and put them where you want them all over again. So my response is to make my sticky notes literally a part of the desktop background. Like all my favorite fluxbox customizations, it's a great idea that requires almost no technical knowledge to program (which is lucky for me!) The code for submenu looks like this: [separator] [submenu](scratch) [separator] [exec] (scratch fore) {gimp ~/scratcher/fg-scratch.jpg} [exec] (scratch back) {gimp ~/scratcher/bg-scratch.jpg} [end] NOTE: The seperator bar I put a seperator bar : [separator] above and below each instance of [submenu] It looks more organized. It visually seperates submenus from single items, but more than that, it gives me a comfortable buffer zone for navigating my cursor. One of the more annoying aspects of using the fluxbox menu has been moving the cursor over that tight right angle where menu meets submenu, submenu meets subsubmenu, etc. If I didn't move the cursor with a high degree of precision, I could open the wrong submenu or start an application by accident. Placing the seperator bars in just this way gives me enough wiggle room to move the cursor more comfortably and naturally, with fewer errors. (In fact, to the best of my recollection, none!) http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/4904/snapper13sp3.th.png (http://img353.imageshack.us/my.php?image=snapper13sp3.png) nolimit974 10-05-2008, 04:52 PM Since everyone thinks I cheated with this months screenshot here you go. http://tpspace.wordpress.com/files/2008/10/newoctoberscreenshot.png nolimit974 10-06-2008, 01:46 AM I don't like blue that much so I had to get a new wallpaper. http://tpspace.wordpress.com/files/2008/10/anotherscreenshot.png Calipso 10-06-2008, 02:02 AM blackbelt, i see boobies and swearing in your screenshot. bad blackbelt, bad :p blackbelt_jones 10-07-2008, 01:06 AM blackbelt, i see boobies and swearing in your screenshot. bad blackbelt, bad :p I've streamlined my desktop, and as you can see, I've cleaned up my act. http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/1424/snapper25qv6.th.png (http://img247.imageshack.us/my.php?image=snapper25qv6.png)http://img247.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif (http://g.imageshack.us/thpix.php) folkert 10-11-2008, 02:40 PM mine is overhere: http://members.chello.nl/f.muller13/screenshot20081011.png that matrix thing is moving by the way Calipso 10-12-2008, 09:25 AM folkert, im guessing you're not using compiz as well? folkert 10-12-2008, 09:32 AM No, do you think I should try it? I told xfce not to manage the desktop, and ran: /usr/lib/xscreensaver/glmatrix -root & Calipso 10-12-2008, 02:22 PM could be worth a try. Not sure it will work but could be fun to try. Although I would imagine system performance might suffer a bit. What would be really interesting is if you get it to work for the wallpaper and for the skydome behind the cube  folkert 10-12-2008, 03:37 PM I read about compiz and compiz-fusion, what should I (apt-) get ? I once installed a different windowmanager (?), and had pretty much trouble to get xfce back, so I might not try it before the next monthly screenshots justlinux.com
