Are you a Linux newbie who wants to learn about Linux but you don't know where to start? If so, then this free Linux newbie's class may be what you have been looking for. The course uses a "Three Bears" approach to teaching Linux because it does not take the "too easy" route of using a Linux distribution that installs itself automatically nor does it take the "too difficult" route of using a distribution that requires the learner to manually compile and install everything from scratch. The course uses a "just right" approach of using Gentoo Linux which is a distribution that can be installed semi-manually.

correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding of Gentoo is that you have to compile most everything....its not a binary-based distro. I don't want to start a flamewar here with this comment, but IMHO this is not a good approach for newbs in particular. Maybe good for folks who want to learn Gentoo, but not quite right for newbs.
just my 2 bits.

Gentoo is a challenge, but newbie or not if someone is serious about wanting to understand linux...this would be a great chance for them to learn a lot along the way...as stated on http://gentoonewbie.org/ this is a free class design to help any level of user to install Gentoo

Gentoo has moved with time and its recent releases are easily installable not much different from the others. The Sabayon, which is a very well put together and popular, is based on Gentoo. It is currently occupying the 5th position in term of popularity in Distrowatch. The desktop is quite stunning and it is preloaded with goodies like Google Earth.

It is possible that a large volume of tutorials are readily available in Gentoo and I do use them as references on Linux in general.

May be it is just me I believe a user learning one Linux long enough would be proficient in operating any other Linux.
