I recently installed Debian 3.1 Sarge installer which came with the Debian Bible. I have a PentiumII Dell XPS D266 with 512mb of memory and 8 gig hard drive. I connected to the internet via DHCP and began to install the desktop mode. During install I got an error message "one or more packages failed to install". As a newbie, I'm not sure what my next step should be. Any help would be grreatly appreciated.

Thanks

What happened? Did it stop?

If not, press on regardless.:) You might try dpkg --audit (debian package audit) afterwards and see if this says anything.

I'd update to the 4.0 installer and try from there... Or, use Ubuntu. Your machine has plenty of RAM to do it... The GUI desktop from CD will be slow, but once you have it installed it should be rock steady for ya.

After the error message about some packages failing to install, I proceeded with the installation to the end. I seem to be able to work from the command line but I tried dpkg --audit and also dpkg -C | --audit" but got audit: command not found.

I changed my $PATH to include /usr/sbin but still get command not found.

I would like to stick with Debian.

Thanks
