Yeah yeah, I know lots of you youngsters gravitated to linux because it's "free".
But now it's time to kick in $2 to sponsor a Linux car at the Indy 500!
http://www.tux500.com/
ESPECIALLY now because the vista fanboys are asking MS to kick in for a car of their own... What are there, like a billion windows users and NOT AN ORIGINAL THOUGHT AMONG THEM??? I guess the only place they've got a fighting chance at competing is on the racetrack... :D
http://vista500.ifastnet.com/
They take paypal at tux500.com. I just gave $5 - you can too!!
Thanks,

Money duly kicked in. Wheee! ;)
(I'd echo the sentiment about F1, but as the page says, Indy is nice for this kind of thing because it's possible to sponsor a driver for a single race, instead of having to do it for an entire season. Just about anything else is for an entire season.)

I assume that a 'Microsoft' car would manage a few (slowish) laps before crashing for no apparent reason, and that Microsoft would issue a press release promising that a reliable vehicle would be available in time for next year's race ;-)

I don't want to be so pessimistic but judging the rate donations gathers up I'm afraid there won't be 350k in such a short time interval. What happens if they won't gather 350k? Will they buy a smaller advertising spot?
I'd also donate for a NASCAR car, my favorite motor sport but I guess that'll take a while to happen now.

They say what they're going to do with the $$ whatever happens...
I'm going to wait awhile and let the news spread...just a couple of corporate sponsors would make all the difference.

I searched "tux500" over at slashdot and got NO HITS!
Some of you guys with /. accounts double-cross post this puppy over there and maybe a bigger news organization will pick it up!!!

Not if they have a windows-esque motor under the hood! :D

Consider it added to StumbleUpon.
FYI for anyone else reading this thread, here's their plan if they don't quite make the mark:
* $25K - $50K USD : Minor Associate Sponsorship; logo appears on the car
* $50K - $100K USD : Associate Sponsorship; larger logo appears on the car
* $125K - $300K USD : Major Associate Sponsorship; large logo appears on the car's engine cover
* $350K - $600K USD : Primary Sponsorship; logo appears on the car's sidepod, and the race team name contains "Team Linux"

I gave $10. If it wins that would be awesome!

If they don't raise enough, I think they should sink it all into an entry in the Red Bull soapbox derby.
I think this is a terrible idea, but that's cause I'm not a sports fag. I picture a fiery crash and a headline that reads "LINUX DEATH CAR!"
But if there's someplace where I can send a check and not use my debit card, I'll kick in a few bucks, because I want everyone to like me.

Yeah, it used to be #justlinux but we all moved to #linuxn00b because the name is cooler :)

Lap 38, Moreno crashes out. At least the cameras had an excuse to zoom in close enough to see tux on the car!

:(
I didn't even get to see him! (That's what happens when I eat meals. Sigh. :p)
I'm hoping I'll be able to find some video somewhere, at least.
(Hopefully Tux wasn't mangled, either; that'd be really bad. Depends on how he hit the wall, though, I suppose.)

I found this URL in a comment on the tux500.com blog, but it didn't seem to work for me yesterday. It does, however, seem to be working now. :)
