HI
I am considering purchasing the Yellow Dog version of Linux for PS3 however, does it offer full support for 720p/1080i sets?
I would like to watch a number of 1080i HD files (.ts) via VideoLAN but i would like my display to be in 1080i mode. Does yellow dog support this?
Also, is there support on yellow dog for reading of NTFS HDD partitions via USB? I would like to extract and copy files to ps3 hard disk.
Thanks
Chris :)

Hi
Yes, it acually only supports HI-Def. Go buy an HDMI cable or component cable. It tells you in the instructions that you can run it in low resolution but trust me you can't. If you want an explanation just ask me and i'll be more than happy to fill you in. Im not sure what you're talking about when u say "reading of NTFS HDD partitions via USB" (cuz im a newbie) but i'll give it a shot. It will read USB media devices like data travelers n such.. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse hook up to mine through USB.
Anymore questions feel free to ask.

cool..
so how do u set the linux OS to 1080i? and does it utilize the entire HDTV?
also, how is playback of video .ts files on vlc PLAYER via PS3 YDL?
with regards to NTFS partitions i meant the external hard drives that are formatted by windows...or used to format into NTFS to support larger file storing and transferring (hd movie/.ts files)

First of all go to the ps3 system settings and change the resolution to 1080i......then go to ydl and when the kboot: comes up just hit tab until it says
ydl1080 then hit enter and it should startup in HD
No....unfortunately i have not had the chance to watch any video files......i just installed it wednesday and now i am at my other house....sorry.
P.s. If I was you I wouldn't buy it, ydl that is, I got mine for free. If you want I can post the link where I got mine from..it's 3.3GB but it downloads at approx 250kb/s so it takes about 4-5 hours to d/l.

OK...that sounds straightforward
Yes the link would be great...although i dont want to do it all and find that playing videos is not all that great..as this is one of the primary reasons why we are choosing to install ..as the VLC player supports all HD video and audio formats...
can u let us know how u get on...if u could install VLC player and play a .ts file clip..if u dont have one ..i could make/send u one..
thanks!

I don't have a HDTV to plug up, but I was able to install YDL-PPC in text mode and run at 480i on a regular TV. Looks very crappy, but that is to be expected for my setup. If you want the text install just hit tab at kboot: until you see ydl-text. This will install fine, but will need configuration before you can run startx.
You may want to look into MPLAYER as an alternative to VLC. I've run mplayer on other hardware without problems and have read many post saying mplayer works fine under YDL-PPC.
PS3, as the default OS, can only read FAT32 partitions on removeable hardware. I have not tested if Linux has the ability to read NTFS or if it is restricted by the shell the PS3 lets the Linux code run in. I would test it, but my eyes hurt looking at the blurry and bouncing screen of my crap TV. Maybe in a few paychecks I'll get around to getting a decent HDTV.
Lastly, I would only *purchase* YDL if you are looking for a phone number to call for tech support. Linux, by its very nature, is free and you will not get a higher quality of software by paying for it. Many long-term users *pay* for their copies by giving back to the Linux community, either by help on forums like these, writting code for their distro, donating to their distro, etc. They offer a list of mirrors to download from on their offical site for free. I'm in the USA and using the USA mirror I got a steady 800k - 1200k download, so only took a few hours to download the entire DVD. When you burn the DVD, burn it at a slow speed to save yourself the trouble of having a corrupt file somewhere on the disc.
EDIT => Here (http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/resources/downloads.shtml) is the link.

MPlayer is easily the best media player I've ever ran across on any platform.
Low in it's use of resources, plays almost any format known to mankind and in almost any way imaginable.
You should have seen the disbelief on my face when i first took a look at it's man pages. (amount of options is simply staggering)
Just see for yourself:

MPlayer is also used as backend for HTPC platforms like Freevo ( http://freevo.sourceforge.net/about.html)

yeah thats why i said just get the HDMI cable it's money well spent for the improvement of quality in picture. But, if you want, i'll help you install it in 480. Don't recommend it but if ya can't afford the 70 dollars for an HDMI cable then we'll just have to deal. Talk to ya tomorrow brother

At least in my case, it's not the cable.. it's the lack of a HDTV. So the cable would not help me. For now, I have YDL installed just for the hell of it - as the flickering resolution hurts my eyes, but won't really be using until I can afford a HDTV which will be a few paychecks from now. I want to not rush getting one and once I have enough money make an informed purchase.
