I recently learned that (at least according to one author) "vi" is pronounced by spelling it out ("vee-eye"), and not as "veye"-- that is, as a one syllable word rhyming with "eye". At least a few members of my local LUG were not aware of this.

The term that I would like to know how to pronouce is "ext 3". Do I say "extended filesystem 3" or something gay like that? Or is there a better shorthand method? If I had my choice, I think that I would say it as a letter and number: "X3".

A long time ago, I pronounced "Debian" with a long e, but it's really pronounced as a combination of two first names: "Deb" and "Ian". That's Ian Murdock, Debian's creator, and his wife. How cute is that?

You're supposed to pronounce the "G" in gnome, but I refuse. I do however pronounce the "G" in gnu, as well as the K in knoppix.

Anybody have something that they don't know how to pronounce. If this thread turns out to have any life, I'm sure I'll be able to come up with several.

Another factor is regional proununciation. For example, here in Oklahoma (which is admittedly not a bastion of correct grammar), I do not know of anyone who pronounces "Ian" in the fashion that you refer to (w/o the long e). That includes people named Ian. :D

No no no... I meant that I used to pronouce "Debian" with a long e in the first syllable, as in "dee-bian". Now that you mention it, there is a long e in the second syllable, and here in upstate New York, in the first syllable of "Ian".

I and most ppl that i know (not that i know many ppl that would have a discussion that would include vi) pronounce vi as vii. v like the v in 'Vera' and i like the ee's in 'seen'. On a side note, vi means 'we' in swedish so it's easier for swedish speaking ppl to pronounce it like that, sounds kinda silly saying 'vee-eye' if youre not speaking english. One guy I know pronounces mySQL 'myskl', basically like 'muscle'.

Gnome => with a G like in GAME....I hate it when people say G like the way you would pronounce the letter while saying the alphabet.
MySQL => My S Q L...although I hear mysequel often.
EXT3 => E X T 3, although my prof pronounces it X3

How do you pronounce fstab?? For some reason I always say, F-Stab.

How do you pronounce the directory named etc?? E T C, or etsee??

"You're supposed to pronounce the "G" in gnome, but I refuse."

Ha! Got a kick out of that. Years ago, at a LUG, one of the hard core Linuxers, pronounced it with the 'G'. I just couldn't bring myself to do it. And neither do the folks I'm in touch with. As far as I'm concerned, it 'Nome'.

It is, isn't it? Once upon a time, it seemed intuitive.

I admit, I say etsee.

If I ever had to say that out loud, I'd probably say "et cetera" without thinking, and then die of embarrassment. Where does "etc" come from, anyway?

How about SuSE? For a long time now, I've pronounced it roughly like John Philip Sousa, but on Lug Radio, I actually heard them pronounce it "Suzy"! It sounded kind of cool, at least with a British accent, and I've tried to cultivate it. But the old habit of saying "Sousa" refuses to die. I'm probably just not cool enough to get away with calling it "Suzy".

et cetera is Latin and means in the English translation "and others".

By saying Sousa you're closer to the German original than by saying "Suzy". In german we usually only say Susie when we attempt to belittle the distro. If you want to pronounce SuSE like a native German speaker, you have to transform the Sousa into a Souse with an open "e" sound at the end, it sounds about the same as if you pronounce the "e" in the word "Celt" (/kɛlt/).

Ah, so many good word plays if you pronounce Wii "We". I wiily love it.:)

I never knew that you were supposed to pronounce the G in Gnome, but you can rest assured that I never will. Whoever thought it was a good idea to use an English word for the acronym and then not pronounce it correctly was nuts. Of course I pronounce the G in GNU and that's a word in English too, but at least they used an obscure word.:rolleyes:

BTW, I love My Squeal for MySQL. I've never gotten into pronouncing SQL as a word so I just say the letters, but I might have to start calling it that just to see what kind of weird looks I get from people.:D

I call MySQL, My Sequel, I did use to say My S-Q-L, but I was told, and have read on the net, that when SQL was being developed by IBM it was actually called sequel, but they ran into naming problems with another company, or something along those lines, so it was changed to SQL, but all of the developers continued to call it sequel, and the name stuck.

Gnome for me is Nome, etc is etcetera, I try to pronouce it like the creater when ever I can...

I'd like to see the source of that, being that it is an established fact that it stands for Structured Query Language.

It is kinda long winded but it is true that SEQUEL was the original name (Structured English Query Language).
Just search for "Hawker Siddeley Aircraft Company" and it should take you the the paragraph with relevent information.

I'm aware of that. Actually, I don't say "Sousa", but something close to that, with the final syllable pronouced a bit more like the vowel sound in "bet".

But I like "Suzy" better. It sounds friendly, informal, cute, maybe even a little bit sexy, and Above all, it's easy for the newcomer to pronounce. People don't take up Linux because they're afraid of feeling foolish,and it doesn't help when you can't even pronounce your operating system the first time you ask for help. I understand that the name "SUSE" is an acronym for corporate entity that is no longer in the picture, so why not just change it to SUSIE? If I were Novell, I would consider that.

But, of course, Novell has non-English speakers to consider, so instead of actually changing the name, maybe Novell should just promote the "Susie" pronunciation among English speakers. What about an advertising campaign featuring a character named "Susie Linux"?

Cant you just see her? She's sexy, but she's also a little bit geeky. Maybe she wears a miniskirt with glasses? The beauty part is that it gets the point of simplified pronunciation accross visually, without the need for expensive TV advertising. A targeted web campaign would do the trick.
