Hello,

I currently have a Broadcom 43xx series wireless card installed on openSuse 10.2.

I am wondering if there is any replacement software available for KNetworkManager. I can connect to my home network, and occasionally on other networks, but not all the time; Sometimes after several tries it will work.

Also, I go to UIUC, and we have a huge wireless network on campus called UIUCnet. KNetworkManger sees the network, tells me all the information about, but will not connect. I know there is not a problem with the network, and there is nothing special you have to do. You simply need to have DHCP enabled, and thats it, and I still cant get connected.

When I cant get connected, the connection status on KNM freezes at %27, and says "Configuring".

The card is set up as eth1 and my wired internet is eth0. But, I do get the card to work on occasion, so I am pretty sure I have the firmware right.

ANybody know why I am having problems, or should I try replacing KNM with another program. Thanks.

most likely its the terrible chipset/firmware involved with those broadcom chips they really are worthless and are known to hang and be buggy, ive seen this issue quite a bit with the dell truemobile minipci cards that use the broadcom chipsets and find it easier to get a intel or atheros based replacement

another issue could be if wpa_supplicant is running via a init script, you may need to restart that script

i have been on uiuc's network, and no you shouldnt have any hangups

It just keeps getting better.

I was just attempting to connect to my friend's wireless network, and my computer completely froze. I had just booted the computer, and had only gotten as far as opening Firefox and the entire thing crashed. When I rebooted, KNetworkManager is not started, and I can not seem to get it started. I was logged in as root, found the KNM directory, and ran the script, but permission was denied.
-Rebooting doesnt help.

What do I do now. Is it worth buying another chip, just so this thing works more painlessly.

I am constantly having problems. If I do get connected to a network, and I disconnect, I will never be able to reconnect. THe only way to reconnect again is by rebooting (or at least thats the only way I knew).

Thanks for your time.

i dont know for sure without some errors if its a Kwhatever issue or the actual chipset/firmware

i do know that i have a laptop with ubuntu edgy installed if the broadcom card is used it hard locks the machine if the connection drops, changing out the minipci card for an atheros based on was the only change, and solved that stability issue, so who knows

on problem i see on the software side is you running as root, of course you know that is a "no no", if that knetworkmanager is the kde interface to network manager it relies heavily on hald/dbus, if your start mixing and matching user sessions and permissions there i could see where problems would arise

one thing you might try to release from a connection is to see if there is a wpa_supplicant script running and restart it

example

# /etc/init.d/wpa-ifupdown restart
