Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : YDL 5.0 for PS3 Kboo resolution/boot-game-os
Hi,
I've looked around the forums here for a bit, but was unable to find any topic related to a problem I am having with YDL 5.0 for the PS3.
Setup:
PS3 60GB
PC CRT Monitor:
VGA input via PS3 to (Component VGA BOX) = Component Out to Box to VGA
My setup supports 480P to 720P, but does not support 480i. The problem I am having is that in the PS3 XMB you have to choose the default OS, and then reset the system to boot in that OS. So, for example I set the default OS as OtherOS (YDL), Linux boots up and I'm good to go. The problem is that in order to return to the PS3 OS one has to input boot-game-os during the Kboot sequence.
Unfortunately for me the Kboot sequence is only in 480i meaning I can't see it on my television.
I was wondering if there is a way to either:
A. Have the Kboot first appear in a resolution of 480P or higher.
B. Access the Kboot prompt from within YDL to reset to the game OS.
If anyone could offer support on this issue I would greatly appreciate it.
Sincerely,
Azel

ps3 has been out for like a week now, dont expect much forum info from a linux forum, unless it relates directly to linux and not the hardware of a PS3
My apollogies. This is the first time I've ever used Linux, and it appeared as if this site could provide some support.
I suspected Kboot could possibly be the same in other versions of Linux and thus someone may know how to adjust it so that it displays in a higher resolution despite the hardware that it is running on.

possibly, but you will have to be patient as support for new things like this take time
Okay. I'll keep an eye out for updates.

The problem is that in order to return to the PS3 OS one has to input boot-game-os during the Kboot sequence.
I originally came to this website for YDL 5.0 information too but since it's so fresh I haven't been able to find much but I may be able to help you out.
I just installed YDL 5.0 on my PS3 and you can restart the PS3 and while it is powering on, hold the power button for 5 seconds until it beeps and it will return it to Game0S.
To return it back to YDL select "OtherOS" under the system settings and reboot.
Hope this helps.

I haven't played with YDL yet(though free ISO download is supposed to be today), so I can only give general information I've found using Fedora(I did get Debian to install, but am still having trouble with the video drivers to get X running).
A few things to try:
- As suggested above, holding the power button for 5 seconds will cause the PS3 to boot into game OS and reset your resolution. This also switches the default os to the PS3 game OS, so you will have to change to 'other OS' again to boot to Linux.
- If your only problem is the resolution of kboot, you can always wait a few seconds then type in boot-game-os without seeing the text on the screen. Not optimal, but should work.
- Read up on Kboot here (http://kboot.sourceforge.net/#doc) , as there may be documentation on setting resolutions that would be useful to you. Personally, I use grub on all my normal boxes and have limited expierence with lilo - so kboot is new waters for me. Though I would assume the config file would be decently documented like most Linux config files are.
- boot-game-os can be issued from the command line after linux has booted. So you could always boot linux, then have it reboot into game mode. A little longer to get to play your game, but it will work. Also, check out this (http://felter.org/wesley/files/ps3/linux-20061110-docs/PlatformSpecificUtilities.html) site. It describes ways to change video resolution of your PS3 linux install at the command line.
Considering the hardware has only been out for a matter of weeks, please do post back any progress or failures for other readers with similar problems.

I had a similar issue but didn't want to start an entirely new thread, so I thought I would ask here. My TV supports both 720p and 1080p, and YDL defaults to 720p if your TV supports it (which it did) however when fiddling around with the kboot.conf file, I chose a video mode (as outlined in one of the links you provided) that my TV doesn't support. So after the kboot prompt pauses for me to enter something, then runs the wrong configuration if I don't do anything, the TV goes blank (dur). So then, how do I change it back/reset it from the kboot: prompt or otherwise?

Oops, fixed my own problem. :) at the kboot: prompt you can enter in two of the other resolution settings, ydl480i and ydl1080i to get into YDL, then change it back.
Thanks for all of the input. Especially considering it's only been a month since the PS3 was released!
Unfortunately holding down the PS3 power button to reset the system doesn't work for me because that resets the PS3 to 480i, which I can't see on my monitor due to the fact that I'm using a component to VGA box only capable of displaying 480P/1080i/720P.
I'm totally new to Linux, so I apologize if any of my comments seem poor.
I tried to reset to the PS3 browser via a command prompt from within Linux using the boot-game-os command, but if I recall correctly it gave an error message (I'll find out exactly what it was after I go home today).
One of the links provided below contained the following line,
"boot-game-os: shutdown linux and switch to game os
This command switches boot flag in “other-os flash area” to boot game os, and reboot onto game os. This command requires root privilege."
Do you think my inability to get this command to work had anything to do with lacking root priviledge?
Sincerely,
Azel

Please post the error message you received and I can try to give information on that. As for root, you should of set a root password at install time. You can either login as root at the login prompt, or type 'su' then your root password to gain root access.
Trilarian thanks for the advice.
The error message that I was getting was:
"Enlightenment was unable to run the application boot-game-os."
As it turns out I had to log in as the root user, and then it worked. That was kind of strange, because for most other actions that require root access a root password entry prompt appears.
Actually I didn't know how to log in as the root via the command prompt, so that will help out a lot.
Now I have to try and figure out why any CDs that I tried to play through the music player sounded like static? This looks like it's going to be a long learning process
On a side note. Are there any good video players for Linux that I can run on the PS3, and does anyone know of any guides on how to recompile source code to run on the PS3?
As always, thanks,
Azel

mplayer should compile, though you are not going to have access to win32codecs and some other binary codecs that are x86 only

if you can install the VLC player, then you may play anything you want on the PS3. the VLC player is self-contained, and thus it has most of the codec you need to play any movie on the internet. I am currently placing a post at the VLC web site to see how it can be installed under YDL; however, I am still concerned about unix (or linux) security after installation.

ok, i have no idea how vlc is going to affect your security, but roll with it
unless someone has already done it for you and packaged it you will have to get the source code and compile vlc for that arch
again, any of the main players should build on that hardware, mplayer, xine, vlc just pick one and go with it

I am not concerned with VLC affecting the YDL security. What I did not make clear was that I am concerned with linux security in general. I was at one of the VLC forums, and posed the question about VLC for YDL 5.0 for the PS3, but it seems it is a hard proposition to make it work.
I don't plan to install YDL any time soon, but when I do, I want to make sure that I take the steps to make this OS on the PS3 secured as I know how.
Thanks.

ok, well basic security principles you use on any OS should do the trick
i'm not sure how familiar you are with unix environments and their inherent security by design, or what you are comparing it to, but i think you will be just fine
