just installed debain again. why does it install exim and ssh by default as well as portmap and other stuff i dont need ? it also installs lpd by default.
i dont need exim or ssh running . is there a way during install to tell it not to install those packages ?

sure....one of the stages of the install asks you what type of system you are installing on....desktop/server/groupserver/ or manually select packages.....pick the last one and select what you want and dont' want.
Or, skip that step entirely, and apt-get everything once the base install is down.

if you want to remove packages you can use apt or you can re run the base-config utility and selct packages you want to install from there
http://www.debianhelp.co.uk/baseconfig.htm and if you selcted the default install option the packages you mentioned would be there.

i know that its annoying that it installs those packages by default.
and there is no way to manually tell it with the net boot to not install exim and ssh. did a reinstall again just the base install. and it installs those packages.

..desktop/server/groupserver/ or manually select packages..
there is no place in the install that lets u install it as that. right after base install is setup. it reboots and exim is loaded as well as other deamons that i dont need running on that box. i guess the only way is to manaully remove them .

i figured it out. it did install exim but then during the next part i was able to remove it it during the setup. thats very strang that it starts MTA deamon then you have to manually remove it during setup if u dont want it

thanks everyone for the post. i have been using debian for a few weeks. base-config is a good conifg tool. didn't realize it uses aptitude which is of coarse the best way to remove stuff very quickly. or to find out what is install on system .
