Hello,

One of the things I really love about linux is it's flexibility in terms of appearance. The fact that we have sites like kde-look.org and gnome-look.org as central theming locations is great, but linux desktop theming still hasn't achieved the ease that firefox has. Firefox is so easy and so fun to theme - pretty much click and go. By contrast, I know with kde, most themes require compiling and things like replacing some files with others.

For example, I was trying to install the plastik mod, vistesque, the other day and while overwriting a few files wasn't a major issue, when I got to the compiling stage, the whole process packed up. I later found out that for some versions of lipstik, you had to add some lines of code to particular files and all sorts of other things. It could also have been an issue with my compiler and various other programs. Anyway, you get the picture.

Someone offered an rpm that could be installed or converted to a deb, or whatever, with alien. This struck me as an extremely good good idea - point and click theming for kde/gnome. Can we start a thread on JL for deb's/rpm's that people have found to work and made up as binaries? Soon, I'll start compiling a few. Any additions are welcome. I think it would be worthwhile to include details such as the distro that they were compiled on, etc.

PS - Has anyone got a binary deb/rpm for vistesque?

Cheers,
Feddy

Before you compile any theme, you should check if the package manager of your Linux distribution doesn't have it already. Popular themes like e.g. baghira get integrated as a package after a while, so you can't have it possibly easier than that. :)
