Can someone please help? I have installed 10.1 on several machines now and I've had no trouble until I tried to install it on one with Xp(dual boot). I have tried re-installing several times and I've skimmed half a dozen post and I'm just having no luck w/ this one. During installation connection failed and updates and patches were bypassed, so I tried again... this time the patches and updates went through properly. I get to gnome desktop and I get my updates there as well.... I even added a few firefox plugins... and did some random browsing... So everything is fine, until the next boot... After rebooting I lost my connection... and don' know what to do from here.. Please God, I dont want to do another reinstall.... any help is appreciated I know Im a newb and all... but I love the forums

If I were you I'd ensure that you're using DHCP to get the ip address for that interface, and that it's configured to come up at boot. The fact that it's a dual boot means nothing. (IMO)
I hear that Yast is the tool to effect such a change.

Thanks for the speedy reply, I'll see what I can do.. I was in yast earlier and had no luck but its quite possible I overlooked something.

I had a similar problem with suse 10.1 at first, seems to have been fixed with a update.
All i did was open terminal become root and tipe "ifconfig" to see whats going on, then "ifup eth0" and "dhcpcd eth0"
"dhcpcd eth0" alone should be enough to get conected. hopefully

I had this trouble with Fedora Core earlier as well on that particular machine... it is a 2006 AMD Sempron. On my older machines I have not had any trouble what-so-ever. I am new to Linux so I'm sure its something I'm failing to do properly.
je_fro,
When I go into yast I go to Network Services- then to-DHCP Server correct?
(when I did that it required disc four and its trapped in an older machine so I had to reburn)but I'm heading back now to see what I can or cant do.
frimann,
I tried to go into terminal but I must be doing something wrong: "command not found"
I want to thank you all for taking the time you have w/ this newb...
je_fro
06-25-2006, 10:20 PM
No, you don't want to run a DHCP server...you want to have your interface automatically configured using the DHCP client.
Are you connecting to a router that's running DHCP or what?
frimann
06-25-2006, 10:50 PM
"command not found" thats becouse your not root just type "su" and then your root password and then the commands

I'd have to agree with that after the installer's partitioning tool borked two existing Windows installs on work machines.

Well I wasnt sure, I didnt think I was doing it correct. I am connected through a router, linksys (should have bought a d-link) I just want set it up to connect to the internet I dont really need to set-up networking because I dont really do alot of filesharing but I think its set-up for networking (when I did the first install I chose not to set up networking and I let it do its thing, autoconfig, whatever you call it but I had no connection) so I reinstalled making it networked thinking that may help, it did not as far my internet connection goes but it did allow for online updates with the second install, which it did not the first installation, so it seems to be closer than before.
je_fro
How do I auto-config the interface?
frimann
Like this? (only with my actual password)
su/rootpassword/ifconfig
or like this?
su <root password> ifconfig
frimann
06-25-2006, 11:47 PM
su enter
it asks for password give it and enter
and your in terminal with full "admin" rights
tipe the commands and they will work.

I thought you had a linksys router? If DHCP is enabled on your router you should have a private IP address (192.168.x.y). It looks like it's telling you what to do: "Network Manager will be advised to set up eth0 but it cannot be assured from here"
Find the NM program...it's gotta be in the GUI menu somewhere....

I do have a Linksys router, why do I have it set-up wrong?
I tried another reinstall and during installation I cannot connect because DHCP client is already running on eth0, whatever that means, and what is the NM program? Im gonna go see if I can find it in the GUI menu... thank you again

I suspect that you could not connect because the DHCP server in your Linksys router isn't turned on.

Okay, so it looks like you have an IP. You should also have the IP's of your ISP's DNS nameservers in the file /etc/resolv.conf. What's in that file? If there's nothing, call your ISP and ask them the IP's of their DNS servers. Or you can try mine, but I'm not sure if it'll work for you...

just copy my example above...you'll need to edit /etc/resolv.conf with a text editor, as root. just su and launch something like "gedit /etc/resolv.conf"
Then:
nameserver 24.93.41.125
nameserver 24.93.41.126

How do I edit /etc/resolv.conf with a text editor? I have never felt so stupid, you must be growing impatient w/ me... I'm very sorry. And if I type "su" is that not considered root? I know I have to enter root password. I cant fix it by just typing this "gedit /etc/resolv.conf" right? Please explain
Skitzy
06-26-2006, 09:21 AM
oh I see. Rebooting now thank you...... I'll let you know what happens.
je_fro
06-26-2006, 09:24 AM
Okay, is there an option for a "root" text editor or "root" filesystem browser? Something you have to enter your password for? Perhaps that would be easier...
Anyway, you'll need root privileges to edit that file, and by launching "gedit /etc/resolf.conf" as root (gedit is like a fancy Notepad) you'll have the permissions you need. It might throw an error when you try to launch a GUI app as root...if it does, ctrl-d to get back to "regular user" and do "xhost +localhost" and then su to root again and retry...is that clear?
je_fro
06-26-2006, 09:24 AM

06-26-2006, 10:04 AM
Well I'm having to reboot out of windows to get to SuSE, the other pc's are in other rooms, otherwise I'd just look off one and troubleshoot the other. you can always use something simple like nano or pico...try:

It sounds like it's also trying to tell you not to edit that file by hand. Yast has a Host name and Name server button for each network interface that you should probably use to alter your DNS servers. It should still work if you edit it directly, but you'll keep your distro happier if you don't.

Ill give it a shot, but I do want to give an update on my status... I tried two other distros since my last post (Fedora Core and Xandros) and with all three I have the same problem but only from this pc. It's a new pc, I cant help but wonder if that has anything to do w/ it. My next guess is the router (Linksys p.o.s.) Whatever the cause it seems odd that various distros would all have the same problem, thats why I'm second guessing peripherials, hardware and what not.

I talked with tech support for my router and I have everything I need to set up manually... gave it a shot... and failed... Nothing seems to work no matter how hard I try... I do want to thank you guys for all your help... Just unlucky I guess.... Oh well I have "The Linux Bible" 2006 now.... guess Ill go set down and read some more... I preffered a little hands on learning, but it seems the only way thats possible is to use one of those crusty old machines I was telling you about. If anyone knows a good partition manager I can aquire for the low, low price of *Free* so I can delete this partition that would be great... Its like having the keys to a wrecked porche.
Heres an idea... lets eliminate the possibilty of it being the router, or confirm thats what it is... One more install.. only w/ a direct connection this time.. bypassing the router

haha...nahh, I never give up! So what are you trying now? You tried setting your IP manually? Can you try bringing one of the other machines in and see if they'll connect? Are you sure you have a "straight through" cable and not a crossover cable? Is the windows partition setup to acquire its IP via DHCP? If so, what is it? It should be something like 192.168.x.y.

Cool...from the looks of things, MAKE SURE the DHCP server built into your router is ACTIVATED. I don't think it is because of the ip you're getting. You should be getting (I'm 99.9% sure) a 192.168.x.y address from your router.

I don't recall whether this was an integrated network card and I'm not going to read through the entire thread again to find out (:)), but if it's a card you might try it in a different PCI slot. If not, there might be something in the BIOS to tell it which IRQ to use. I had problems similar to this the second time I installed Gentoo and it turned out to be a conflict between my USB and network, but it was caused by a kernel bug in a much older kernel so I don't know if that would be your problem here.
I guess you could try booting with the nousb kernel parameter just to try it out.

want to emphasize: his problem is different (tomhardware) but altogether the same really if you read on down...

seems no one supports that network card.... I've been checking a few different distro's... guess it would be easier to find a different card after all..

Yeah, and they can be bought cheap these days. Although it's odd that an integrated nForce network card would be a problem. I've used two onboard ones on my motherboards and they both worked just fine.
