Idiots. Thinkpads with Debian (WLAN supported) are the major reason for the success of Thinkpad sales in Switzerland among college students. OTOH I am pretty confident that the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology will continue to ship them with Debian, because (a) there's the demand and (b) they have darn good IT people.

Heh -- about the time I build my next system, maybe I'll call Lenovo's pre-sales questions line, ask if the Thinkpad line is still available with Linux preinstalled, and when they say no, say "well, never mind, I'll be looking elsewhere then". ;)

(Yes, I plan on building my own system, and I don't ever plan on having a laptop, but that's not the point. :p)

Bad decision #1 by Lenovo. Let's hope it doesn't turn into a slippery slope to sucking like all of the other laptop manufacturers.

I think it is a bad marketting decision to announce it like that, but I suspect that the reality is that the existing hardware will not change an awful lot, and thus will continue to be well supported under Linux. Would be nice to see what the ThinkWiki.org guys think about this.

FWIW I'm still not sure that IBM is, as yet, convinced about Linux as a desktop OS. They seem to focus more on server. Additionally, it should be pointed out that IBM doesn't actually have any control over the actions of Lenovo.

Well, but Lenovo sure has control over IBM, hasn't it? Or is IBM still autonomously doing its business and just hands the big bucks up the ladder?

Not really. IBM and Lenovo are two completely separate companies. They've been working together a little to smooth the transition from IBM making their computers to Lenovo making them, but other than that Lenovo handles its business, IBM does the same.
