Linux - Which Version?

I want to learn about Linux but I am not sure of which version I should install. Does anyone have any insight to the differences between each version?

Please refer to the section in our forum, ISO confused, that is entirely dedicated to this question. I suggest you have a read first with the sticky threads, many question will be answered by those already.

Personally I always install linux-2.6.x, but on my sparc boxes, some are running linux-2.4.x
I started out with redhat and ended up (rather quickly) with gentoo.
Perhaps starting out with ubuntu or fedora is the way to go....
The initial hurdle is the install, and I hear those two are pretty painless...
(sorry about the thread lockage, but this is a _really_ generic question that's been asked/answered to death here, plus it was in the wrong forum)
