i was told by several people that linux is free and is avalible to download. but upon looking at sites. you can't download them and you need to pey for either a CD or a membership fee....

Is there anywhere that is actually 100% FREE?!

You most likely hit the popular Redhat/SUSE sites for info, and they do make it harder to get their brands, but they are not the only ones in the playground.

http://fedora.redhat.com/ this is Redhat free version

http://www.centos.org/modules/tinycontent/index.php?id=15 is a free version of Redhats "pay" distro

Haha. Well said. I think for any linux newcommers we should give them whatever is esyiest to install with the least hardware problems. You want to encourage these people to use Linux, not drop it in 30 seconds flat after booting from CD
