Hi,

I have a friend who is a teacher wanting to set up Linux on a whole load of old PCs at his school for use by the children. He has a requirement that to access the school's ISP he needs to use Firefox 1.5.

He's tried Ubuntu 5.10 but that ships with a version of firefox < 1.5 so he's in a catch22. He can't upgrade Firefox because he can't access the internet in the first place.

So ... can anyone suggest a newbie friendly distro that currently ships with FF 1.5 ? The next generation of Linux users awaits your advice !

Thanks.

how on earth will they stop you from using the internet if you're not using firefox (and use konqueror/epiphany/opera instead?)

I'm with these two gentlemen. I seriously doubt that the ISP is doing that. Not if even sure if that's possible.

I don't think this is a networking problem from what he says.

He gets assigned an IP address via DHCP fine. However, he has to log onto a Symantec proxy server before he can browse the internet proper. This authentication process requires him to use Firefox 1.5. If he doesn't authenticate then presumably his IP address is blocked by the proxy server.

He has a dual boot WinXp / Ubuntu box and has achieved the following:

WinXp with Firefox < v1.5 = failure to authenticate
WinXp with Firefox v1.5 = successful authenticate
Ubuntu with Firefox < v1.5 = failure to authenticate

Any further thoughts ?

Maybe you could get FF1.5, either use the official build or the one from Ubuntu-backports (I'm assuming they have done one), and put it on a CD so you can install FF1.5 once Ubuntu has been installed.

retsaw - I think I'll go with your suggestion thanks. It was always gonna be a longshot to get a current distro that comes with Firefox 1.5 but it was worth a try. :)
