Hi all

I am currently exploring the interesting process of WarDriving/Pen testing, as my company is going to be offering this as a service soon.

I have 2 pcmcia cards, a US Robotics USR5410 (acx100) and Linksys WPC11 V4 card (realtek) - and a built in Inprocomm b/g.

I am struggling to find a distro that supports the cards. Auditor Security Edition (tried 3 versions) dont support either, and neither does PHLAK. I happened across Troppix, which has patched drivers for both Realtek and ACX100, but only has ksimet installed by default and not the AirCrack Suite as well.

So...I was going to try and install Troppix to HDD, and install Aircrack + Cowpatty, etc myself but was wondering if anyone knew of a distro that has everything I need, pref a Live Disc?

Thanks

Hong

your going to need a better card, preferrably a chipset that supports being put into rfmon mode, as far as support goes, everyone needs to get it clear in their heads, hardware support involves the kernel, and since any distro can run any kernel, especially when your compiling it, then hardware support is really distro independent, i doubt your going to find out of the box support with any distro for either of those chipsets

the linksys card is just terrible, and should never have been allowed on the market with the realtek chipset, atheros and prism cards support rfmon and work quite well with wireless tools

either way your going to have to compile your own kernel, or some kernel modules to get support for your card

there is such a distro, it is called whax I believe, my company http://www.axcesspc.com now offers this, the CEO of the company went and got his advanced hacker certs and is now training me on all the howto's and I will be getting certified next summer. I suggest personally running ubuntu 5.10 and installing nmap/airsnort/ethereal/kismet/john the ripper/

download ftp://ftp.belnet.be/packages/whoppix/

Thanks for your replies - I actually found a distro, called Troppix that has patched realtek and acx111 drivers.

The linksys is a pile of junk, but I have been semi successful with the USR5410.

Kismet worked right out of the box, I had to install Aircrack suite myself but they all work. Just cant actually use the card for anything other than sniffing!! Cant seem to connect to any Wlans.

Could this be because the networks you are sniffing are actually secure?

Well, yes they (it) are/is secure - its my own home wlan!!

I have been dong some 'playing' at home over the weekend, trying to crack my own WEP.

I have actually managed to succeed in sniffing weak IV's and using aireplay + aircrack on Troppix, using my USR5410 (acx100/111) card.

But trying to use the card for connecting to my home wlan and surfing, etc - wont have it. Seems all the settings take, but it still doesnt work.

I am thinking its maybe something to do with not coming out of rfmon mode?

Ethernet works fine...

But sayng that, just bought a Netgear MA401 off ebay cheapish, which apparently runs Prism2 and is on the Auditor's tested list so I;ll probably wipe that Troppix part and start again with ASE

Thanks

Hong

if that distrobution doesnt support some chipset out of the box, you do know you can compile a new kernel or module to make it work, you dont have to distro hop trying to find out of the box support randomly

Yeah, I knows. Truth be told, my Linux skills are quite basic. I first touched it about 2 yrs ago, and I recompiled a few kernels then but that was with specific help from an overseas friend via messenger. I havent touched it since, duw to work specifc programs that run on Windows.

Yep - if this new service we are offering takes off, then yes I will. I like linux anyway, just that time doesnt permit me to use it very often!
