Hi, guys....this is a "full up place" in a lot of the forums....and welll done.

I'm a xandros nut, I found that I have a knack for assembling computers from dollar parts and donate them to folks, and install Xandros 3.0 OCE on them, I post a lot over at forums Xandros....

And, I've got probably the ONLY Xandros Fan site in existence, started it a few weeks ago...with weekly additions of games tweaked for Xandros(Ultimate Stunts, LinCityNG(not original), Don Cefarino and others; some really unique eyecandy, the odd article or two, and Spanish translations for our Hispanic friends...

I use Xandros because it just works out the box, on time every time. I have a stack of, I think at last count, 23 distros. I got two to work on my junque...first Fedora Core 3 but is LARGE, and Ubuntu, but wouldn't get on then net...the rest of them, nada...but the first time I popped Xandros 3.0 OCE into a machine, a PII 300 mhz I think, 3.2 gig HD...it just ran...found the net, found the dollar printer and printed a test page...it just did it, and has done it every time...

What made me Windoze free was the Brother MFC 420CN (printer/scanner) I neede the scanner...a few clicks, two command line entries and it just ran....

anyhow...got it on a P4 1.3 ghz a Duron 700mhz(game machine) ete.

But....and I hope you folks don't think this is a spam, if the admins think it is then please delete it...

But, if there are any Xandros folks or people that just want to see some spectacular eyecandy...come on over to the site

and....as Arnold said.....I'll be baaaakkkkk...especially the hardware forum...:)

I do like Xandros for it's functionality out of the box, and especially as it's Debian based. I'm looking at installing it on an old Celeron 333MHz with a measly 64Mb of memory to see how it performs. I used to run it on a PIII 600MHz which ran it beautifully.

Xandros 2.0 and 3.0 are among the 90 odd distros in my box.

It appears to me that it is user-friendly to the Windows users but a bit disappointing for the Linux users becuase the Linux filing system is a root-privileged item hidden away. Thus a Xandros user can spend years on it and still knows very little about Linux by playing with MS-only partitions automatically mounted as drive "C", "D", "E"... in a Linux desktop.

What is the point of learning the computing skill that fits neither into MS Windoze nor Linux? It is a buffer zone to lower the impact for a Windows user migrating to a Linux. I just feel staying too long with Xandros may not be the best deal.

Personally I feel much safer to know how to access my MS partitions by mounting them myself than not knowing how to do it and not aware of a Linux has /boot, /home, /etc, /root.....directories. This is because this basic skill can enable me to survive in any Linux, BSD or Solaris system.

Xandro appears to have an above-average ability in coping with the hardware and asks the minimum questions during an installation. It is easy for newcomers to Linux.

I can only remark that the Spanish Translation it's kinda bad.. it's noticeable that you did it with a translator :P

Other than that.. congrats for the initiative!

Hi guys,
sorry I haven't been back sooner, starting a new semester and a second job...

Xandros will run on your celeron 333 but just a tad poky, but then so does Win2K

That was the first of my own machines upon which I installed. I've installed on 28 computers so far, I donate them and sell a few....slowest was a PI 250mhz(I'll have to check my book) and fastest a P4 1.3gighz...

As to the memory, you'll need 128 minimum. and on a 333 it will be kinda poky, another 64 mb speeds things up considerably. You could actually probably get most of the way through the install with the 64 and, I've tried it as an experiment, but it stalled somewhere around the printer.....

As to "Windows like" that is precisely why I install it on my donations, and also the ease of install.., I start the .iso and go get coffee.

After the install it said it had to as a few questions(and I groaned thinking shades of Fedora core 3, Ubuntu, etc. etc.)...But, it asked for the time zone...whether I wanted to accept the printer it found(found! I was in love right there!), then.....what had did I use my mouse with!?...I guess they figured that they oughta ask something!!....and then did I want to register? So I clicked yes...thinking it would print a sheet and no.......UP POPS XANDROS NETWORKS!.....It didn't even ASK to find the net.....it just did it....

and 30 odd computers(donated and mine)....that's all I've ever had to do...

I've sold one to a little old man who was developing alzheimers and his wife wanted a machine that he could .......truth now....play Yhatzee online with...!...I mean with oh, I don't know 4386 yhatzee games for free and I don't know what all, and he has to play online....but she wanted something relatively safe from viruses etc. and he's happy as a little lark...when he knows what's going on.....I go by and check once in a while....and Xandros just works....

I've also donated to Hispanics, little ol' ladies at churches and h.s. and college students(usually sell to them though)....all outflow and no income is a pain......

I usually "mod" them with holes and lights and a paint job...but the deal is that the Hispanics can e-mail their inlaws down south and the kids can do school work out of the box....Some of the kids have also got the premium membership and are going to stay with it...

As to not ever doing an apt-get....that is quite true....

I'm now Windoze free(except for a dual boot for the j/c whereat I teach) because of the Brother MFC420CN scanner/printer/fax/card reader etc.

three clicks and three command lines and it just went....

But.......and here's another reason I particularly like it is that I now have the luxury of being able to learn "ap-get" and "tarballs" and all that without having to worry if the thing won't run the next morning when I have to do online stuff for school.....

And, since I like games and eyecandy....I made my first baby steps by learning how to download games first using Xandros Networks....a click....but then going outside the network and running some from the menu and some from the run box...and now I'm going to try installing a theme from KDE look to get more into how installing stuff from outside the Network goes....

Eventually I want to try to "make" a "package" which can be installed in Xandros "unsupported" for teachers to have a complete grading, seating, etc. package....

So....yeah you're right, it's not bleeding edge.....well, probably not even a paper cut :) ...but at this stage that is exactly what I need....and I'm making one linux convert at a time :)

Hey, thanks for the replies, and I will be at the forum..more regularly now....

AND it is a very nice forum....
