I am wondering if I am ready to switch to linux. My System:
P4 2.00 GHz, 256MB RAM, 40GB, Currently Runs Win XP
Now I have a few questions
a. Will my system run linux good?
b. Whats the best Windows emulator (I've heard Win4Lin and Wine are good)
c. What distro should I use? I would like KDE, or similar. I'm considering Linspire. I need something easy to install.

a. Your computer will run linux fine.
b. Not sure, I have not really used any.
c. I wouldnt recommend Linspire. They suck you into paying for software that is normally free. I would say go with Mepis.

well if every computer has the exact same motherboard, video card, network card, and other devices then you will be okay. ;)
if they don't you might wanna get your motherboard model number and model number of your devices and check the distro you choose, HCL.
Most of the time with a modern distro, you will be okay.
KDE comes on many distros.(you can install it on all) I have never used it but Mephis or Kubuntu might be a good choice.

If you have to ask someone else...then maybe you're not ready. Ask yourself. Either you are or you are not. Search the forums. Search google. I am partial to Debian myself. Others will say Mepis...Gentoo....FC4...etc. Debian is IMO easy to install and run. As far as windows emulators I am sure both mentioned work well. Why not move away from windows applications and search for a good linux replacement. What apps are you wanting to run in an emulator? Check out this thread...je_fro gives a good link to determine a good distro. Good luck and enjoy linux!

Thanks guys, I currently run linspire 4.5 on my laptop, and I love it. I don't know, I think I want to just keep at least one windows pc around. My Top Results were Mandriva, SuSe, Gentoo, and Slackware. Thanks

The less you rely on windows the readier you are.

The less you rely on windows the readier you are. Talk of using an emulator is worrisome.

If you're looking for an Microsoft replacement, then no you're not ready.
If you're looking completely new Operating System and prepared for a learning experience, then yes.

You can always install dual boot, then you select Windows/Linux at startup. Download a live CD, stick er in, reboot and see if everything is detected. I like knoppix for these tests, however, pick your own. They run off your CD without installing.

keep ur windows partition if u want to play games.. thats my advice.. emulators never work too well...
and for most apps, try to find linux eqivalents.. if u find that u really need the windows counterpart that much, u should not switch
