Hello,
I recently shifted from MS windows to FC4. My CD/DVD burner reads and writes at a speed of 4-8x where it used to do a very comfortable 40x. I am having similar problems with my cd rom drive. Is there a way to change this through configuration files or something? Thanks in advance.

Since FC4 uses both K3B and XCDRoast, try...
K3B: Settings -> Configure K3B -> Devices -> Check to make sure your drives are seen as the right ones. If so, then just select your write speed when burning (it defaults to "Auto"). If the max speed shown is less than that of your drive, you need to do some homework.
XCDRoast: Setup -> CD/DVD Settings tab -> Play with slider control for CD/DVD speed. If the max allowed is only 4/8x, then your drive isn't properly detected.
It should also be noted that if you're copying from one drive to another, it will slow down to the slower drive speed. This means if you have a CD in an old 8x reader being copied to a newer 40x, it'll do so at a maximum of 8x (unless you have it buffer to the HD first).
You may have a system bottleneck somewhere that slows down the transfer (ide_nodma?), so the program is compensating for this by slowing down in turn.
I'd also look at your media. If you put a CDR in there that only does 4x, then... Make sure you use CDRs rated for your drive speed.
