Cleaning out my magazine closet, I uncovered this old magazine. It's, of course, ten years old and wanted to see what 'new technologies' existed then.

Check this out:

From an ad -
THE BEST 28,800 BPS CONNECTION
SupraFAXModem 288-starting at $219.95
NOW with V.34!

It's time to separate theory from reality. Some 28.800 bps modems claim to be four times faster by offering sensationally high throughput. but sensational throughput depends on sensational phoneline conditions. Not a reality in today's telecommunications. In the real world of less-than-perfect phone lines, the SupraFAXModem 288 outperforms all the competition. But dno't take our word for it - just look at the reviews...

An example on Internet News headline:

The Twain Shall Meet - Terisa Integrates S-HTTP and SSL security protocols.

This particular issue centered the story theme on pending wireless com and going mobile with pda's getting, gulp, 'emailing capabilities' and such. There was also some articles on voice chat using the internet as a free phone service. It's really cool how the internet looked ten years ago. I mean, we were all, largely, around then and knew what the internet had at that point. But, I mean it's interesting to see how the pros in the industry saw the expansion of services. It seems they were quite accurate (wireless internet access in cities for instance, but not using WiFi). And PDA's going wireless. I'm sure we all saw it coming, I know I did.

It's quite compelling to read, actually. The kicker? Advertisement on the back cover reads: Explore The Internet Free! Ten hour Free Trial on Delphi Internet. 9600 and 14,400 bps at no extra charge!

HAH, another lebowski fan. That, by the way, is one of my favorite quotes from the movie. And a very funny scene. "Eight year olds dude." HAHA

It's déjà vu all over again (http://abcnews.go.com/Business/SiliconInsider/story?id=750595)
