Hello!

I have a question or two about Slackware. I currently run a 24x7 headless game server. It's a P3-933x2, 2 g RAM and scsi drives. It's currently running SuSE 9.1. SuSE is OK, but I'm looking at other options. I have used Gentoo in the past, but don't want the long install time. I used to run RedHat,but stopped due to their $$$ structure. I need something stable, light and fast. I heard that Slack
is an excellent choice for servers and very stable. I have never used Slack. From all of the slackers :D out there, I'm wondering if this will fit my needs. I'm assuming that updates aren't much of a problem. But I really don't know that. Anyone have an opinion?

Thanks!

Why don't you give a chance to OpenBSD (http://www.openbsd.org/)? Which, by the way, their new slogan is "Hackers of the Lost RAID" (http://www.openbsd.org/lyrics.html#38). :D

I haven't tried OpenBSD on a game server. Although an excellent OS. We have a couple of servers running it at work. But, I don't want to introduce a new OS at this point. Considering that the software was comnpiled for Linux, It may cause some unnecessary problems.

Slackware would do what you want, so would many other options. Slackware installs, especially without X, are quick and simple. A few configuration changes and you are up and running. The only thing you might want to do is compile your own 2.6 kernel if you need 2.6. 2.4.31 is the default, although 2.6.13 is an optional during install now.

VectorLinux is a great distro based on Slackware. Looks great and works good on old hardware.
