However you can always kill X with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace if you need to. je_fro 10-24-2005, 03:03 AM ctrl-alt-backspace usually does it infiniphunk 10-24-2005, 03:39 PM je_fre what happened to you?! Your avatar from before was kinda cute, if only a little bit disturbing. Now its just disturbing! But back on topic, remember if you're using CTRL-ALT-Backspace to end your x-session, I don't think this will save your desktop sessions. For example, if you're using Xfce and you put some effort into customizing your desktop, when you log back in and start X all the stuff you did will be lost. Just a thought. ArgPirate 10-24-2005, 08:29 PM In mandriva of you are already in runlevel 3. like if you have to type "startx" when you start your computer then you you can just go to the little menu starter. in kde its the star. i dunno about gnome or the others and then just logout. that outta kick you back to the command line. otherwise open a terminal and type init 3 that will dol it... timothykaine 10-24-2005, 09:12 PM CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE will restart X, and in most distros kick you back to the display manager (kdm, gdm, xdm), and not the CLI. If you want to exit X and go straight to the CLI, try CTRL+ALT+F2 or F1, and as root, run "init 3". That will kill X and it will not respawn itself. If you have started X by running "startx" and not have it automatically running when you boot up, then CTRL+ALT+Backspace will do it. WhiteKnight 10-25-2005, 10:08 AM jeisma started x with 'startx', so ctrl-alt-backspace wont get it restarted, x will get killed... init 3 or watever changes the run level.. runlevel 3 on many distros don't have x, but for some, its run level2.. depends on ur configuration... justlinux.com
