I'm going to have to go to Poland for a month soon. A colleague had his laptop stolen while he was out there, and it's put me off taking my fancy kit. On the other hand, I've got a 2.4ghz laptop with a borked hard drive that I wouldn't desperately miss, and I think it would be a better choice to take.

I am wondering if the following is even feasible: I would like to install / on a 1 gig USB stick (I know it's gonna be slow, but I don't desperately crave speed for this project), /boot on the damaged HD (Any attempt to read, write or format past the 3 GB point results in a computer freeze) and use it for basic word processing and watching the occasional movie.

With space limited, I can't just whack on Mandriva and have done with it. But I could really use DVD playback support. Everything else is a bonus, but not actually necessary. I certainly won't need programming tools, games or a flashy WM.

Any suggestions or "You can't be serious" comments are welcome. Thank you.

Get one of the later Knoppix 3.x cds and put the image on the harddrive. Increased speed, still under your 3gb mark (2.2gb uncompressed, 700mb compressed)

That is Knoppix 4.0 if you want the latest.
