Well what do you like to do with your computer?

Linux in an amazing operating system. Stable, fast, and lots of software that's open, and free.

Unless your a hard core gamer, you should be able to do anything you can do with windows in Linux, just faster, safer, and more stable. Oh, yeah, and FREE, OPEN, and LOGICAL!

Though your going to have to try some distros. My personal experiance I like SuSE, and now with the openSuSE project there's a version for Mac computers (PPC).

You can get it at http://opensuse.org

Also there are many other distros that are equally as awesome as SuSE. Debain, Redhat, Slack, just to name a very few. All distros have there pros, and cons, but over all a Linux box, is a Linux box.

If others could please point out other distros that work with Macs that would be great. Only ones I can think of are openSuSE, Yellowdog, and my own homebrewed Redhat for my PowerPC 66.

What possibly did this thread have to do woth "software"?

Please read our fourm descriptions / posting guidelines _before_ posting.

our technical forums are for technical problems, not opinions, etc.

if you do not know why you want to run Linux then perhaps you should run OS/X or Windows... this is a Linux help forum.

PS: I am sorry but... this is one of the most lame posts I have seen in many many years.

blender3d also exists for linux (and I must say it runs like a charm). As far as to weather or not you should switch, thats a matter of personal taste. I would suggest dual booting mac OSX and one of the linux distros that exist for PPC. Debian, Gentoo, Mandrake, and OpenSuse come to mind. then you can compare and possibly even transfer your files between OS's. After a comparison you can then decide which OS you want to keep (or keep both)

Yes, I know about blender, I use it becuase there's a linux version for it. You do know blender is open source?

SuSE is a distro. Basiclly it's Linux, with all the applications that you could want, and services you need to get a fully powered Linux based system going. Also SuSE is easy to install, and simple to run.

BTW, Blender has been proven to perform much faster in Linux, then in any other operating systems. That's why project Orange is using about 100 Mac Mini with Linux installed to render their short. Putting Mac Minis to use!

Also you don't have to completely wipe out Mac OS X from your system. Linux allows you to have more then one operating system on your computer at a time. It's called dual booting. When you boot your computer you get s screen asking what operating system you want to go in. Also Linux, and Mac gets along real well, becuase Mac OS X is Unix, and uses a Unix based filesystem. So Linux can write, and read your Mac OS X system, and I think, not sure, Mac OS X can read, and write the Linux system. So if all your music is on your Mac side, you don't have to move it, just have Linux read it from Mac OS X.

Linux' main attraction isn't about excellent software, logical design, or even just "tryng to be different". It's about Free/Liberated/Open Source Software(FLOSS). It's about Freedom. Freedom do whatever the **** you want to do with it, including copy it and give it to a hundred friends. Freedom to change it to how YOU like, instead of how someone else thinks you should have it. Freedom to choose your tech support company, instead of being locked into ONE tech support company(Apple/MS).

Don't bother wasting your time. It sounds like you don't really want to anyway.

I'm running a G4 Powerbook, a Debian workstation, and a Gentoo server, and they all nicely play together. Since Darwin/OSX is a Unix clone it's easy to connect them through a network. The biggest difference between OSX and Linux is that Linux isn't as much about point 'n click as OSX is. On the other hand, if you feel comfortable with OSX' Terminal.app, you're gonna have an easy time with Linux, too.

This calls for a few quality quotes from our former mdwatts :DIf you have to ask why you want to install Linux,
then perhaps you shouldn't.

You're fortunate that other member (who shall remain nameless)
is no longer here or you'd never hear the end of it.
