My coworker just bought a new disposable computer, (eMachines) so I have his old one in my office to retrieve some files for him before it becomes mine and I install Slackware on it.

It's a Celeron 633 with 392MB RAM, but it runs slower than a 386! It's Windows 98 and he uses IE to surf porn, etc so you can imagine how riddled with spyware it must be! Not to mention the FAT filesystem crapping out...

It's always good to have reminders about how stable a Linux/Reiser/Firefox combo can be!

Amen to that. I especially shake my head when they pretend to have no clue where the stuff comes from - "it was just all of a sudden there".

Give him a Knoppix cd to boot this box from, smile wryly at the awe that descends upon his face when he realises the performance difference, and say "Thanks for the machine, Bud!"

Then pat him gently on the head and mutter the words "You have much to learn, young Padouin" :D

Believe me! This guy isn't worth the effort to train! I also forgot to mention that he never ran Windows update, ever! It's a wonder the thing booted at all!

Perhaps there really should be a license before people are allowed on the net. For the good of all mankind.

On a brighter note, now that I have wiped it and installed Windows 2000, I have sold it for $125.00, and I'm getting a Dell Optiplex in trade that I can also refurb and sell for $125.00 or so. w00t!

Don't forget the Linux/ext3/Firefox combo, too! :)

Yes, but I can only speak about what I know, and I have literally never used ext3! Go figure!

But you caught my drift, journaling is the key...
