Knoppix 4.0.2

Anybody tried Knoppix 4.0.2 yet. Looks like it was just released a couple of days ago. I'm about to download it and see if it'll work on my laptop.

I think my latest version, which is currently in a shipping crate, was 3.8.1, or something.

(maybe this could be in a different forum. :cool: )

Thanks for the link! I found it at a couple of european sites, but the speed kept dwindling down...

My linux boxes are in a shipping crate right now. I guess I'll have to find a windows 2000 bittorrent client.

I guess I don't understand bittorrent. I went to bittorrent.com and downloaded the windows client. Installed very fast. I went to http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=02920#0 and started downloading KNOPPIX_V4.0.2CD-2005-09-23-EN.iso. It asked me what I wanted to use to download it and it was defaulted to bittorrent. Now, the little dialog for bittorrent that shows the download rate says it's going at 53KB/s. (just dropped to 47) With the other download, not bittorrent, I stabilized at about 113KB/s. And of course, I'm looking for something closer to 300.

There's a slider bar at the top of the dialog that says Maximum upload rate: nnn KB/s
At first it said 20 KB/s. I don't yet know what that means, but I moved it over to where it was reading 290 KB/s. Maybe I'm getting my B and b mixed up. (It's been a long day...)

Hmmm... now it's starting to speed up. Up to 115 and fluctuating. Will I ever get close to my DSL speed? Oops... just dropped to 75.)

EDIT: But it says only 2:48 hours remaining. 2:46... hmmm.. seems reasonable for such at large file at DSL speeds... 2:43

bittorrent requires .torrent files which i posted for you, it is a small header file that the bittorrent client uses to get the file

so tell the bittorrent client to open the .torrent file after you grab it, and it will download for you

And it all depends on how many users are seeding the file(s) and at what rate...

well knoppix tends to be a popular download, so it should run fairly fast

If you use a router some blocked ports can slow your download. to be honest if your getting 113kb/s the ftp site are't going to let you get it any faster, sicne most probably throttle their bandwidth. It is only 3 hours for a download which is better than what I get, with 6 people using a 2mb adsl connection.

rule of thumb: torrents generally speed up, the longer they go.
plenty of exceptions to that, though....

Sorry I didin't get back sooner. I've been getting ready to jump on an airplane Thursday for a little 2+ year adventure to the Marshall Islands.

Before I went to bed I noticed that the torrent download had jumped to 192, and so, as je_fro mentioned, it had increased in speed. Also, then, today I discovered that it left a nice little folder on my desktop that included the iso, as well as the md5, and some other files I haven't looked into yet (8 files in all).

dkeav, your link was to a DVD iso. I need a CD iso, and that was in the link Icarus posted.

Anyway, thanks to all. Hope to be back online in a week or so... uh.. dangit... but at dial up speeds again on my personal systems. Now, where's that Zoom external modem I had... it's in a box around here somewhere. ;)

I was wondering why I had 2 different DVD ISOs, the first one was to 4.0 and the one I posted was to 4.0.2 :p

The DVD is nice, I didn't get to play with it much since it had troubles with my ipw2100 wireless card for some reason.
Still need to get the cdrom version since most machines I work on only have CDroms and no DVD drives...
