Ok, now I am having a problem installing the alsa-driver ebuild in gentoo. I built the kernel that I'm currently using with the genkernel all command. I couldn't get the other kernel to boot for some reason, but I'm working on it. When I try to emerge alsa-driver I get an error saying that the .config file is missing from the source location (which I'm assuming is correct with the genkernel command). The kernel that I attempted to build has it's config file renamed to .config.bak in the linux source directory, but it's not what I'm currently using (again planning to change that once I get into gentoo's customized version of K).

Is there somewhere on gentoo's site that I should be looking or is there someone here that would know where this is.

TIA

they have full documentation on alsa/sound on the gentoo website in their docs section.

Thanks Hayl. I'll take a look and let you guys know if I find a fix.

I find building the drivers as modules from the kernel are usually good enough, then emerge alsa-utils for all the toys like alsamixer

When I use genkernel to build a kernel, I leave alsa and oss both blank, but put in the sound support. Then simply emerge alsa-driver and you are set. :)
(Well, alsaconf after wards to set up alsa but... ;) )

I re-built the kernel without genkernel and it is now working. I had to make sure the .config file had the right information as per the gentoo walkthrough and I got alsa-driver merged finally. I got ALSA to boot up now, which is more than I can say for Debian so far. Now if only I could get bootsplash to work...

Good to hear that is all working now, and as for the bootsplash...fbsplash is the way to go
