I am trying to intall Debian, but after I partition the disk it fails saying that it cannot get a package. The failed package is different just about every time. I have tried the 3.1 Net install, I've also tried the full install and the same thing happened. I tried installing Ubuntu only to get the same error. I wanted to run debian because its lightweight and apt-get is very nice for painlessly install things.

I am open to suggestions about other distros. I just got an older box from my dad (P3 700mhz, 512 MB Ram, 32 MB video card). I want to run a simple file server to back up my data. I would also like to run a DC++ client and a bit torrent client on there, to take some load off of my main pc.

Have you tried either picking a mirror close to you or switching mirrors?

Yes, I've tried many different mirrors. When I downloaded the disk 1 iso (650mb) it shouldn't have been going out to the internet to get packages should it?

Damn, thats not what I wanted to hear. I did get red hat 9 installed on it last night. I guess it doesn't help that the thing has been formated 8 million times.

Unfortunately, reading the board for a few years by now that's what it is in most cases when an installation doesn't work (any distro). That's why I asked first about the mirrors hoping this would be the mistake. :(

I ran the diagnostic software that came with the harddrive and it reported 1 bad sector, which is fixed. Debian installed fine. Thanks for the help.
