I'm making an attempt to install Gentoo on an old computer.
I am trying to get the emerge command to work offline, as this computer does not have the capabilities to be on the internet yet (it is not on a network, and the only internet capabilities it would have is through ppp). I have refrenced post #138417 to see if maybe it's just as simple as exporting the PKGDIR or PORTDIR and telling it to go, but still looking on the internet. I cp'd all the packages from the package cd and the distfiles location from both cd's to the usr/portage directory (thus where I'm trying to get emerge to look for the files). There is an ALL directory, and distfiles directory under /usr/portage and everything is mounted as per the install guide on gentoo.org.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have gotten through chrooting to the new gentoo environment on the handbook, up to the point of emerge gentoo-sources or vanilla-sources. I try to type in emerge * and it says it's unable to resolve host.

TIA for any help / guidance that you could give.

I'm not at my computer right now, but I think there's a -k or -K option that will tell it to use only packages. I know at some point I accidentally ended up emerging KDE from scratch because I didn't realize I needed that.:) Something to try anyway.

Thanks for the suggestion. It was something with the merge of the portage snapshot that did it. It's working now.

I'm batting a thousand on my 0 reply posts today. This makes two that had already resolved themselves.:)

Glad it's working though.
