any. you don't pick distributions based on your hardware, you pick them based on if you like their init scripts, package management system, etc.
they all use the same kernel.

i have a Compaq ProLiant so fare i the only distro that comes to minde is redhat

It's not so much about the hardware, but what you'll be doing with it:
mail server
web server
file server
etc.

all i want it for is for holding data, so me and my friends can stash stuff on it.
what a good server distro that you guys would recommend>?

I run Slackware with samba for just such a purpose.

The PC is a PIII 500MHz with 128 MB RAM and four hard drives; one for system software, and the other 3 in a software RAID 5 configuration. That is where my 'public' folder is located.

I also use it as a web and ftp server for inter-office stuff and it handles all three tasks just fine.

regardless of what you are doing with it, EVERY distribution of linux can run all the same software.

pick one and try it... if you don't like it then switch to another.
