Just installed SuSE 9.3 pro. Tried to log in as root, with correct password, and received the following:
"Root logins are not allowed." That was a big shock and surprise!!!

I need to add a couple items in xorg-cofig(for GeForce 6600 graphics) as SuSE suggested during the installation. I would like to open /etc/x11/xorg-conf in a text editor to make the additions. But, I don't know how to obtain root permissions that will let me do this. I can enter YaST modules as root and I can su to root in a terminal. But, I don't know how to su to root in a terminal and retain root permissions into the editor to make changes.

In my forum search for similar problems, I only found situations where the user was ONLY able to login as ROOT!

TIA

su to root

then start texteditor program from root terminal

ie in gnome

su
gedit xorg.conf

logging in as root is a feature that is probably disabled(and it should be)

Thanks, soule. The screen, after booting, had become generally unusable. I was able to login at a command-line prompt. When opening xorg.conf I didn't see what I expected so didn't proceed. I reinstalled SuSE instead. I discovered that, in the first installation, I had overlooked a note at one of the stages. Following its recommendation made a significant difference...a seemingly good installation.

SuSE mentioned in the release notes that "another option" for the GeForce 6600 graphics difficulties is to download the binary-only driver from nVidia. I did and it made improvement well beyond my expectations.

Thanks again for your reply.
