I am not a Suse user but maybe I can help anyway. So what are you trying to install?

first off read the posting guidlines. you need to use a proper title

ask a clear question

what program did you download, where did you get it, what is the filename, what did you use to download it

did you search www.google.com/linux

calm down

and no not all linux distrobutions install software the same way, the all can compile from source, but you probably download a package made for suse, which installs differently that say a .deb package in debian.

Extremely easy. Download the Appropriate SUSE RPM (u using 9.3, then download the Suse 9.3 RPM). You may already have it on CD. Under System-->Yast, install and remove software. Search to see if it is on the CD. Anyway assuming it isn't, and you want to install xyz. Find the right version of rpm. Download. Open file manager, right click on the RPM, select Install with Yast. It will prompt for root password. When the window opens us, select accept. Poof, done. Any dependancies will be noted, and it will ask for your install CD if needed.

Linux uses a concept called PATH, so, it doesn't matter where it is installed, etc, the program that you run will be in your path (unless it is a utility only for root), so you don't need to know where it is. Simply click on 'Start-->run command' enter the plain name xyz.

The above is true for RPM based distro's such as Suse, Mandrake and Fedora. Start with this unless you truly can't find the right RPM.
