I'm running Ubuntu Hoary and just downloaded and installed e17.

Is there a guide on the net or a how-to on how to configure e17? I can't seem to find the iconbox, get the sound to work, or use the menu editor.

Thanks!

Edit: I've read the documentation on get-e.org but it wasn't much help for what I was looking for.

Since E17 is in active development the answer to that question could change on a daily basis. There are getting to be some gui tools, however, the most reliable way to configure it, is with enlightenment_remote (which, btw, has TONS of options!).

The options for enlightenment_remote include everything from desktop backgrounds, number of desktops, modules, menu scrolling, fonts, full screen options, keybindings, mouse bindings, fonts, etc....

To the best of my knowledge, there is no support for sound events and such.

The menu editor and such is still new and takes a bit to get used to. A handy gem is e17genmenu which will search your system and create the eap files that e17 uses in it's menus and such.

The iconbox is actually one of several things that you can choose.
If you are looking for the one that simply shows iconified apps, that would be the ibox module.
If you are looking for a bar with icons on it, then you can use either ibar or engage.
ibar is part of the default modules. engage is part of the modules_extra package.
If you've installed that one, you have several other modules that you can load with enlightenment_remote.
Engage also has a systray with it. To be honest, I like engage, it it's part of the reason that I'm running e17 right now. I like the pop-up effect! :D

Oh yeah, and for sound, I just have esd start in my ~/.xsession file!

Whew, lots to take in there.

I think I have most of the modules installed and will certainly give them a try.

The problem I have with engage is that I haven't figured out how to add apps to it. It will automatically add the active application to the module and then get rid of it when I close it. The system try doesn't like my gaim for some reason.

I'll play around with it some more and post any questions I may have. Thanks for the help!

The menu editor is called entangle.

If you click on the desktop ==>> configuration ==>> applications (Only there in the most current release) ==>> Menu Editor

The background editor is in the same place, and takes edj files. (It's a proprietary file type used by e17, that, after you get used to it, is quite handy.)

For gaim, do you have the system tray module active?
Also, do you have an icon for gaim? The icon used by the system tray is the one that is set for the app. To set an icon, start gaim, then <Alt><Right click> on the title bar and select Edit Icon from the menu that pops up.

The other modules that are available are xrandr, notes, weather, snow, flame, and monitor. Can't remember all of them, and I'm too lazy to look right now. :)
They should be listed by directory in where ever the modules were installed.
I'm not useing Ubuntu so I couldn't tell you where they would be located, on yours.
In my gentoo system, they are in /usr/lib/enlightenment.

I can't seem to get the modules_extra package and engage is still not working correctly. It displays an icon for gaim, which I could change but then disappears on ocassion. The window list also displays "shortcuts" for applications when I minimize them so it launches new instances instead of restoring the minimized apps.

I may remove enlightenment and try a clean install of everything. I used a how-to from ubuntuforums.org. I'll search around and keep plucking at it.

Its a work in progress but its too awesome to ignore it and wait for a stable release.
